Movie Reviews of MirrorMask

Movie Review: Trippy, but worth the wait
Summary: 5 Stars

From the first time I heard about this movie I wanted to see it. However, it never played in a theater close to me. It was worth the wait.

This movie invokes past works of Henson, Gaiman, and McKean. I am a fan of all three, so this is biased. This movie is like watching a graphic novel. Interesting story, incredible visuals, and comic wit.

Unlike Labyrinth you care about the humans in this movie. The doesn't start drab, it kicks in with interesting visuals and fun characters. Then it goes into the "other" reality and that's when it takes your breath away. It also reminded me of some of the artwork and video's of David Bowie (his Outside period)

This movie could be too much for your standard movie watcher. However; for the non standard movie watcher, those both cerebral and artistic, this movie is for you. It's what most studios are afraid to do.

Give your brain some food. Watch Mirrormask.

Movie Review: Pure Mackean- and no one knows how to market that!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll start out with full disclosure- I am a fan of Neil Gaiman and Dave Mackean's work. When I found out about this film, I went to see it opening night with my girlfriend. I think it should be said that anyone who is a fan of Dave Mackean and Neil Gaiman's work in comics and books will be thrilled by this excursion into film.
The movie is consistantly original and imaginative in the extreme. Strange and dangerous creatures lurk around every corner in Mirrormask. Many of them look like Mackean's xerographic works.
At the same time, Gaiman's writing is consistantly human. The characters are clever and their emotions are convincing as they cross their personal arcs.
If you are not a Gaiman/Mackean fan already, you will love this film if you like imaginative fantasy films like Time Bandits, Spirited Away, The Adventures of Baron Munchousen or Labyrinth. That said, when you see Mirrormask, it will be like nothing you have seen before.

Movie Review: Stunningly original and outright eccentric special EFX and storyline.
Summary: 5 Stars

Not that I was expecting anything all that impressive but the 2005 rendition while certainly better than the 1994 version (not the cartoon on Fox Kids), is still a massively disappointing and shoddy attempt at adapting the comic characters on the big screen yet again.

MirrorMask centers on Helena, a 15 year old girl in a family of circus entertainers, who often wishes she could run off and join real life. After a fight with her parents about her future plans, her mother falls quite ill and Helena is convinced that it is all her fault. On the eve of her mother's major surgery, she dreams that she is in a strange world with two opposing queens, bizarre creatures, and masked inhabitants. All is not well in this new world - the white queen has fallen ill and can only be restored by the MirrorMask, and it's up to Helena to find it. But as her adventures continue, she begins to wonder whether she's in a dream, or something far more sinister.

Movie Review: eye schorching fantasy flick
Summary: 5 Stars

i had only heard of mirrormask as a whispered movie, i found out i wasent realesed in major studios. i got it on DVD and was blown away, it was absolutly mesmerizing. the graphics were beyond our time and the story...timeless. its about helena who works in her family's circus, when her mother falls ill she would do anything to make sure she gets better. she is then transported to this world that apperently she created from her imagination were the darklands are slowly invading and the light queen is in a eternal slumber and only the power of the mirrormask can awaken her. helena takes up the job cause this light queen looks like her mother and maybe if she awakens the light queen, her mom will get better. she along with a resident of the world embark to find the only thing that will awaken the light queen, the mirrormask. see this rare little gem and be blown away.

Movie Review: Gaimen+McKean= Crazy delicious
Summary: 5 Stars

The best advice I can give is not to imbibe in any mind altering chemicals before viewing this film, it is a mind altering chemical in and of itself.
Brilliant surreal imagery, a stand up cast and a spin on classic storylines, everything you can expect from Neil Gaimen.
If you grew up on films like The Dark Crystal, The Labyrinth, The Never Ending Story, Krull, Legend, or any of those amazing 80's dark fantasy movies, this film is for you.
If you read Sandman, Neverwhere, American Gods, Stardust or anything by Gaimen, this film is also for you.
If you want to try something radically different, then again, this movie is for you.
Otherwise, turn away, fold your hands peasant, this is not for you.

PS- really, love the cast, can't wait to see more from Jason Berry and Stephanie Leonidas
