Movie Reviews of MirrorMask

Movie Review: A wonderful story
Summary: 5 Stars

I have always been a big fan of Jim Hensons works and those that have followed since his passing. When I first heard about this movie I was very intrigued and couldn't wait. When the movie finally came out I went to see it right away and though it wasn't what I was expecting I was still overly happy with the movie in all.

Many complain about the movie stating that it's simply visual and the story is basic, and even a few others complain that it was too confusing and to these people I say Nay!

Yes the movie is very visual but it takes place in a world created by a young artist both through her artwork and dreams so of coarse the visuals are going to be over the top, I for one hate it when my imagination is over the top (sarcasm).

As for the story I don't quite see how it can be confusing or too basic, the only thing I can think of is that it may be a little to much to form with fairy tales. It isn't exactly a complex story but the story that is laid out before us is one that can be related to. Somone who doesn't like their life as it is now and dreams of something bigger, but then her eye's are opened and she realizes her life is perfect even though it isn't.

Movie Review: Doing what a movie does best
Summary: 5 Stars

Some tales are told best around a campfire. Others belong on the pages of a book. And some stories demand to be told via the film medium. Mirror Mask, I feel, is one of these. From the first moment when the theatre darkened to when the last credit scrolled off the screen, I was entranced. And I walked away convinced that this particular story could not have been told as effectively in any other way.I left the theatre feeling the intense genius-envy I get whenever I experience something Neil Gaiman has had a hand in.
As a purveyor of fantasy, I read a tremendous amount in the field and see many movies in the genre. It's so easy to become jaded, so easy to see exactly where the current of a tale is carrying you; and then I encounter something like Mirror Mask and I fall in love all over again. I realize afresh that fantasy has no boundaries.
There are movies that leave me with a feeling of satisfaction, where I give a great sigh and feel content with a wonderful ending. Others, like Mirror Mask, set off a string of creative fireworks inside my mind and leave me fully charged and ready to see all the wonderful beginnings in the world.

I highly recommed this film.

Movie Review: WOW!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I heard about this "amazing" movie from more than a few of my friends. I bought it on good faith because I absolutely LOVED Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal as a kid. When I asked a friend to describe it to me all she could say was "Well, there is no way to describe it other than eye candy... or kind of like Tim Burton on anti-depressants on a really good day". With that shaky testimony in line I ordered it and kept my fingers crossed...
But oh my was I surprised! I was forewarned about the "animation" and cinematography style of the movie, so that didn't come as a surprise (because I was warned I wasn't turned off right away like I normally would have been) but after a few mins of adjustment I immediately fell in love with it. It is a unique story of a girl that finds herself in the world that she herself created through drawings and her adventure on finding her way home. It is super cute and creative and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something unique to sink their teeth into. It is written by Niel Gaiman and in creativity I would rate it right behind Coroline. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Movie Review: Terry Gilliam reborn
Summary: 5 Stars

Over past few years we have been treated to a number of fantasy films that did their best to look like moving Tolkien's calendars. Well, the thing is that I don't look for "real goblins" or "real talking beavers" in a fantasy movie, I'd rather have something - something not quite real, maybe even fantastic for the lack of the better word. That's where Mirrormask leaves all of them, all of these new CGI-generated balrogs with CGI-generated pimples, in the dust. Cinematically it's akin to Brazil, Time Bandits, and Kin-dza-dza with their totally original worlds with new histories, geographies, even physics and metaphysics. That's cinematically. Storywise it goes back to Gaiman's classics - Neverwhere, Stardust, and American Gods - where the protagonist moves along from the banal to mandane, when - wham! - fan hits the poop back, and ya'll find yourselves on the wrong side of the mirror. In these difficult times, when Terry Gilliam sealed his abdication with the release of the heinous Brothers Grimm, I find a glimmer of hope - reflected off the Mirrormask. And now to the 4th beer...

Movie Review: A brand new fairytale
Summary: 5 Stars

A lot of reviews have stated this film has no real substance in the story but I must disagree. Those reviews keep trying to define Mirrormask in terms of their own childhood fantasies, but in Mirrormask you find a fairytale full of all the terrors that are unique to today's world. No longer are we concerned with children losing themselves in a vast, uncharted world. Now, the children are frightened of their "parents", the parents who don't love them, the parents who only want to use them. How are the children to find their way to the parent who truly cares for them; how can they tell the difference? In most of the movies that are compared to Mirrormask, the children are lost and in search of home where everything will suddenly be all better. Mirrormask, however, explores a new dilemma - children faced with multiple homes, none of which is the perfect place where everyone is happy all the time. And given the option of homes, how is the child to know the right one? To me, Mirrormask has achieved something only rarely seen today; it has created and brand new fairytale.
