Movie Reviews of Mimic 2Movie Review: Queen of the B's Summary: 2 StarsI had the opportunity to watch Mimic and Mimic 2 back-to-back. This helped immensely. In my opinion, a sequel should add to, or enhance the story of the original, but should also stand alone, so that people who haven't seen the first can still enjoy it. Mimic 2 does neither. Apparently the dvd contains a cut scene that explains a lot. Why would the moviemakers feel that an explanation scene in a sci-fi thriller is expendable?? The leading lady does well and pulls us through this dreary little movie. Seeing Remi in the first movie helped as she is completely unrecognizable as the very same character. My favorite aspect of this movie was the fact that Remi, as the proposed "queen" was the ONLY female character in the entire film - the school children, Feds, hospital staff were all male. That's as clever as this film gets. The ending was a complete let down. I saw the last line coming a mile away, since it was set up earlier. Also, not to spoil anything, a dangerous element introduced toward the end is completely ignored. I don't expect sequel to be great ... "Creepshow 3" is without a doubt the worst piece of trash I've ever seen ... but there's no reason that a movie can't make sense!
Summary of Mimic 2Four years ago, a cockroach-spread plague threatened to decimate the child population of New York City. Then, research biologists developed a species of "Judas" bugs engineered to "mimic" and overrun the diseased roaches in their grubby habitat. The plan worked until the creatures evolved to mimic their next prey ... humans! They were all thought to be dead, but the mutated cockroaches have now undergone another unimaginable metamorphosis and are once again threatening to take over! Bursting with amazing special effects and loaded with unstoppable excitement -- you'll thrill to every moment of this pulse-pounding crowd pleaser! The original Mimic aspired to evoke a mood and tension akin to classic horror films like the original versions of The Mummy or Frankenstein--to create the kind of dream imagery that lingers in the brain for months after. This may seem like a high ambition for a movie about giant predatory bugs that learned to roughly imitate the appearance of human beings, but Mimic was more successful than you'd expect. And so is Mimic 2, a movie with much simpler goals--Mimic 2 just wants to be a lean, effective horror flick that capitalizes on the inherent creepiness of insects. A schoolteacher named Remi (Alix Koromzay, previously seen in Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return and the remake of The Haunting) has trouble with men, but not half as much trouble as they end up having with her; every guy she's recently dated has been killed and had his face sheared off. Before too long, her school has a serious infestation of giant mutant cockroaches. By the end, the story is full of holes--but Mimic 2 does a smart job of delaying any explanation for a long time while building some compelling eeriness and successful jolts. The special effects are sparingly used and surprisingly good when they do appear; Koromzay and costar Bruno Campos are engaging presences. All in all, worth checking out. --Bret Fetzer
