Movie Reviews of Mildred Pierce (Keepcase)Movie Review: A title character you won't soon forget Summary: 5 Stars
With its self-sacrificing mother character who works her fingers to the bone for an ungrateful child, "Mildred Pierce" is in many ways the quintessential 1940's "women's picture" I thought it would be. But I happily discovered that it's a bang-up, tough, and pretty stylish film noir, too, complete with murder mystery. And it's all based on a classic James M. Cain novel, another happy discovery.
The guns, gowns, and shadows of "Mildred Pierce" look great in this sharp Warner Brothers DVD, which is also packed with a variety of interesting extra features. These include a terrific collection of trailers of other classic Joan Crawford films, as well as a generous documentary on Ms. Crawford's career, that- at almost an hour and a half in length- is like getting a whole second feature on the DVD.
If you enjoy discovering or re-discovering (I did the former in this case) classic Hollywood films on DVD, you can't go wrong with "Mildred Pierce".
Movie Review: Awesome Film From One Of Hollywood's Greatest Actresses Summary: 5 Stars
Prior to a year and a half ago, most of what I knew of Joan Crawford was from the biopic "Mommy Dearest" based on the novel written by Joan's adopted daughter, Christina. Both the book and the film portray Joan Crawford as an immensely insecure, malevolent, narcissistic, disturbed woman...which knowing Hollywood...was probably all true. Yet despite her personal flaws, she was an undeniably great actress. Her talent jumps off of the screen and into your psyche. I think her personal trauma enabled her to become 1 of the best actresses to ever grace the silver screen. She took from her own fragmented existence and brought the characters she portrayed to life!
With that said, Mildred Pierce is a MASTERPIECE!!! A brilliantly portrayed and directed film with an awesome cast. It is 1 of Joan's and hollywood's best films! I'd highly recommend it to anyone that loves classic movies.
Movie Review: Joan Crawford does it again... Summary: 5 Stars
Another great film noir, that takes a little different approach to things than others. This time, its told from the woman's perspective. Joan Crawford starts out as forlorn woman, whom, you're not quite sure what she's going to do.
The story plays out, single woman trying to make good trying to make ends meet and give her children everything she never had, with a scheming, spoilt daughter that knows exactly how to get what she wants.
Problem is, a body has been found, question is, who did it?
The details are recounted while Mildred delivers a narrative of events to the local police. While the viewer might be able to work it out by about the half-way point, the enjoyment in the film comes with how the story plays out and exactly who does what to get to the end and what the consequences are.
Movie Review: Truly Timeless Summary: 5 Stars
When watching most films that were made prior to the social changes of the '60s and '70s, one is usually struck as much by contrasts to today's world as one is by the quality of the actual writing and acting. Most films of the '40s and '50s, no matter how excellent, are firmly rooted in a particular time and place.
This film is an amazing exception. The hair styles and cars are about the only things that are dated here. The women are strong and independent, the dialogue is fresh, intelligent, and unsentimental, and the pace is quick. If someone were to remake this film today, they'd be hard pressed to find elements that needed updating or improvement.
This is a real gem of a movie that has stood the test of time. 5 stars!
Movie Review: Mildered Pierce Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent movie. love it everytime. I am so glad to have been able to place this in my classic movies collection as I have been wanting to get it for along time. Joan Crawford as always plays a fantastic part. And I her love for her daughter despite the fact she is horrible to her mother. As the saying goes "only a mother could love".
I highly recommend this movie and if you are seeing for the first time you will be glued. I was and still do. It is the kind of movie where you can't help but voice your opinion about whats going on while you are watching it.(Or that could just be me) I am sure any classic movie lover will enjoy this movie.
