Movie Reviews of Midsomer Murders: Set 11

Movie Review: Ingenious murders committed with wit and brutality, all solved by DCI Tom Barnaby with his own ingenuity and persistence
Summary: 5 Stars

This time Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) must deal with some uncommonly ingenious crimes, but the causes of death have returned to the more-or-less garden variety...just the usual garrotings, bludgeonings, shot gun blasts and drownings. No one this time stakes out a victim on his lawn and then rains down bottles of wine on him from a miniature trebuchet.

There have been rumors that the government intends to build a high security wall around Midsomer County. The plan is to keep inside all the local psychopathic killers that abound in the bucolic villages and small towns. The few innocent residents will be permitted to relocate, while the rest of Britain's crazed and jealous murderers will be placed inside the walls for the safety of the nation. Tom Barnaby plans to retire in protest when that happens, sometime in the future, since the only way he and Joyce could keep their home would require him to slay a neighbor. .

Meanwhile DCI Barnaby, unflappable, persistent and with a wry sense of humor, must deal with a double murder in the Winyard, a long abandoned house on the outskirts of Midsomer Newton (The House in the Woods); the apparently accidental death of Sir Freddy Butler, a larger-than-life man with multiple wives and heirs, and a will that goes missing (Vixen's Run); a series of seemingly random murders but which are all linked to a death that occurred years earlier...and they all happened during Oak Apple Week, the autumn festival at Midsomer Barton (Dead Letters); and a particularly nasty blackmailer who we are not sorry to see get his, but, like Barnaby, are saddened at who the killer turns out to be. Barnaby finds time to wade in the ice-cold water near a Channel village, much to the distress of his feet (Down Among the Dead Men).

This set of four programs features solid mysteries, some of them intricate, and all well written and acted. Barnaby has a new helper, Detective Constable Ben Jones (Jason Hughes). Barnaby was impressed by Jones as a uniformed copper in The House in the Woods and arranged a promotion. I think he's going to work out just fine. He's not too handsome and not too confident. Hughes makes DC Jones a young man who is ambitious but knows he needs to learn a thing or two. He speaks his mind when he feels he needs to, and he's getting used to Barnaby's wry sense of humor. He's not afraid now and then to cautiously give back a little of what he receives. Barnaby is a bit more of a mentor with Jones, and the relationship is a good one to see. One of the strengths of the series also is the number of fine actors showing up here and these. In this set we get to enjoy, among others, Simon Callow, Sian Phillips, Joss Ackland, David Bamber and an especially fine performance from George Baker.

Between 1997 and 2005, Midsomer Murders has created many, many mysteries for Tom Barnaby to solve. The series remains one of the best of the British mystery programs.

Summary of Midsomer Murders: Set 11

MIDSOMER MURDERS SET 11 - DVD Movie
Midsomer Murders, Set 11 presents four more gruesome yet impish mysteries from this ever-dependable series. DCI Tom Barnaby (John Nettles) is joined by his latest protégé, DC Ben Jones (Jason Hughes) as they investigate roiling emotions and rash acts in rural England. In The House in the Woods, Nettles first meets Jones while delving into the case of a young house-hunting couple who are garroted in their car. A girl in a bee costume finds a drowned woman' body in Dead Letters, in which a long-dead beauty queen is linked to a series of present-day deaths. The past haunts the present in Vixen's Run, only it's sex and parentage that have been covered up--when a wealthy glutton dies of natural causes, nastiness soon spreads among his heirs, while a series of rhymed clues lead fortune-hunters on the trail of lost emeralds. And in Down Among the Dead Men, the shooting of an obsessive neat-freak reveals a web of blackmail that many involve a policeman that Barnaby deeply respects. The scripts are consistently engaging (Vixen's Run, with its treasure puzzle subplot, is particularly fun), the supporting casts are full of stalwart British thespians (Simon Callow, of Four Weddings and a Funeral, chews the scenery with relish as a lecherous doctor in Dead Letters), and there's always at least one sequence of genuine suspense or spookiness. Nettles--staunch, good-humored, and doggedly determined to catch the culprit--provides a calm axis for all the enjoyable mayhem and pettiness to wheel around. (Newcomers need not shy away, every 100-minute episode is self-contained.) --Bret Fetzer
