Movie Reviews of Midnight CowboyMovie Review: The hustler being hustled Summary: 5 StarsI did like this movie becuase it is a "could be so real" movie. It is about a man moving to the big city from the small town wanting to be a sexual hustler. When there is no knowledge about the "vocation" that he is going into, he is the one that is being hustled. This movie is not a happy story or one that is particularly funny it is a very real "small fish in a big bowl" story. I do recommend this movie to anyone that likes a "close to real life" kind of story.
Movie Review: AWESOME MOVIE--DEEP AND MOVING! Summary: 5 Stars[...]
This film was deeply moving from my perspective because it was so well produced. The subtleties and nuances are what truly distinguished the film. Thus, for instance, the very low current of homosexuality which undergirds the two main characters is always present, always acting, but doing so behind the scenes, in a way that keeps the viewer unsure of exactly where the deeper feelings stand between the two men. Another nuance is the love-hate relationship our two protagonists share with one another. They example the classic case of "can't live with him--can't live without him". [...]
In essence, what I found so truly impressive about the film was its realness, a realness disguised under character persona. Joe and Ratso had not truly cared about any other male until they met one another and had to rely on one another. The ending of the film is quite tender, depicting how caring and gentle and loving Joe is in nurturing Ratso during his debilitating illness on their bus trip to Florida. The film indicates a transformation, an expansion, a growth for both characters, as they come to realize that their lives are much more than about parochial and narrow self interests.
This film won several academy awards (1969) and, in my opinion, deserves its classic moniker. Both Hoffman and Voight turned in excellent and dynamic and exceptionally convincing performances, and I would say this film showed them at their best acting potential. I have added this one to my small collection and expect to enjoy it for years.
Movie Review: DIDN'T AGE WELL... Summary: 3 StarsThis film raised a big stink when it was first released but it's hard to justify winning Best Picture Oscar compared to the competition (other than being daring at the time). The performances are strong but the idea of a dude conquering the big city (this Texas hick should've tried Houston or Dallas first) is rather stale. Interesting slices of NYC in late 60's but the rather well-dressed bum (?) in front of Tiffany's is a little over the top. The supporting cast overacts for their brief appearances so it's up to Voight and Hoffman to save it from being pretty pedestrian.
Movie Review: Wow, this is bad, really bad Summary: 2 StarsThe story of these two characters reminds me of two worms vainly swimming against the current of a flushed toilet. If a film presents a story with no redeeming qualities is that film worth watching? I think not. Fine cinematography in the Texas opening scene and the classic Nilsson performance of Everybodys Talking cannot salvage a film that is nothing more than an early appearance of big budget decadence. Skip the film and go sit in a gutter for ten minutes. Same effect.
Movie Review: Three thumbs up! Summary: 5 Stars"Midnight Cowboy" is a classic film directed by John Schlesinger. Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight are excellent.
