Movie Reviews of Michael Palin - HimalayaMovie Review: The highest form of entertainment Summary: 5 Stars
This time ex-Monty Python and all round nice guy Michael Palin takes us on a journey through the Himalayas, visiting not only some very little seen countries (Bhutan for example), but introducing the viewer to cultures rarely exposed to a western audience.
The narration and indeed presentation is, as always with Michael Palin, witty and insightful, leaving you both inspired and with a smile on your lips, but the imagery in this series is second to none. The astounding and breathtaking landscapes are absolutely magnificent.
There are as on the other Palin travels DVDs very good extra material in this release, including an interview with Palin and loads of scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor.
Highest possible recommendation.
Movie Review: Palin Climbs High Hills Summary: 5 Stars
M. Palin starts in Afghanistan and travels through Pakistan, Kasmir, India, Nepal, Tibet, Miramar and Bangladesh. He visits a dentist, a bull-racing, a high-altitude soccer match, an isolated grammar school to give an English lesson, various religious temples, the Dali Lama in exile, an elderly English military officer who has spent decades in India, and climbs up the back-side of Everest. Not all of the way, of course, but to where the air starts to thin out considerably. This is a casual documentary, with humor and beautiful scenery. 6 hours, including the extra material. I'd seen his previous docu-travels on PBS: Around the World in 80 days and 'From Pole to Pole'. So I wagered that I'd enjoy this one as well. I wonder why these are not also in print on DVD?
Movie Review: Another engrossing travel series from Michael Palin! Summary: 5 Stars
Finally! Region 1 fans of Michael Palin's travel series are at last thrown a DVD bone--Himalaya, the latest of Palin's adventures, is as engrossing as his other series, and features amazing photography. The picture on the DVD is sharp, colourful, and clear, and the sound is beautiful. Needless to say, a must-purchase for fans of Palin's travels, but also for all those interested in travel and learning about landscapes and culture in other parts of the world. Now, if only BBC would get on the ball and release "Around the World in 80 Days", "Pole to Pole", "Full Circle", "Hemingway Adventure", and "Sahara" to Region 1. In the UK you can get a box set. Why not North America? Are you listening BBC? HELLO!!!
Movie Review: BRAVO! Palin does it again! Summary: 5 Stars
All of his series are fantastic--and Himalaya is no exception.
It is intense, funny, uplifting, breathtaking, and awe inspiring. The mountain views are incredible.
The video production seems to have improved (it was never bad to begin with). It has more drama and vibrancy.
Watching Michael Palin is like going on a journey with an old, dear friend. You embark on a journey to discover of new cultures, customs and rituals that amaze and inspire.
Standouts: Michael's talk with the Dalai Lama, Annapurna and Everest, the world's highest polo game, the bull races, and the serenity of Bhutan.
A must see, a must own. You will want to see this over and over again.
Movie Review: Himalaya Makes Leaves Me Breathless Summary: 5 Stars
Michael Palin breathes new life into stale travelogues, he is so friendly that he attracts wonderful people. Himalaya starts out rather dull, maybe it's the country - there are no women in the society but by the end of the tour there are plenty of women in sight and in the interviews. By the second episode I was caught up in the beautiful landscape and the interesting cultures. The interview with the Dalai Lama is one of the best I've seen. There is much information on cultures, religions, the out of the way tribes, food, and beauty of the areas, and most importantly of the diversity of the people. I can't wait to try another Palin series.
