MICHAEL & ME (2004)
directed by LARRY ELDER
approx. 90 minutes
Larry Elder has a number of accomplishments to his name. The two most famous are probably 'The Ten Things You Can't Say In America' and his radio program "The Larry Elder Show". He was also the TV judge on 'Moral Court'. Here he takes a stab at filmmaking with mostly positive results.
Guns are something that America has a hard time really talking about without getting too emotional. This is true of both supporters and critics of the 2nd Amendment. This movie is from a pro-gun position and almost every person interviewed is pro-gun as well.
You will hear tales of gun control gone bonkers. For example, the story of a UK man who was robbed six times finally decided he needed to protect himself. When he was robbed for the seventh time, he shot the criminals, killing one and wounding the other. The criminal who lived got three years in jail but the home owner got life in prison AND is being sued by his assailant! This is because self defense with a firearm is not considered a right in the UK. On the issue of "waiting periods", "Jane Doe" explains that when she attempted to purchase a gun she was told she'd have to wait 10 days. Sadly she was raped and beaten two days later at her workplace. You will also hear Suzanna Gratia-Hupp recount the horrible 1991 incident that occurred at Luby's restaurant in Killeen, Texas. A man drove his truck through the window and opened fire on people inside. Hupp saw her father murdered before her eyes in a tragedy that left 23 dead. Although she owned a gun at the time, she wouldn't have been legally allowed to have it inside the Luby's at the time of the incident. She went onto be elected into the Texas Legislature and defend concealed carry permits for guns.
Another area that is covered is how gun control effects poor people and the black community. Former crip gang members are interviewed were they say that gun control has never prevented them from obtaining semi-automatic weapons. The legislative hysteria over "Saturday Night Specials" (formerly inexpensive hanguns) deprives poor people who live in high-crime areas from defending themselves.
Now for some of my criticisms. Larry Elder tries to beat Moore at his own game by "debating" him in cartoon form. This was done to add humor to the film, and because Mr. Moore did not return his calls to do a real debate. The problem is, it isn't funny enough to serve its purpose and ends up looking infantile. He also brings up issues that have nothing to do with guns such as the Iraq War. With statistics on your side, why take the low road? Also, the section about celebrities was totally pointless and seemed like a last minute addition. In general I think Moore figures too prominently in this movie (i.e. the title) and while he is a favorite target of conservatives, the segments involving him are more distracting than anything else. The movie isn't about Michael Moore or even 'Bowling for Columbine', its about guns in the United States. Moore is small potatoes compared to an inalienable right.
Here is a partial list of other people appearing in this movie:
Kenneth Blanchard, author of 'Black Man With A Gun'
Robert Cottrol, author of 'Gun Control and the Constitution'
Bernard Goldberg, author of 'BIAS'
Stephen Halbrook, author of 'That Every Man Be Armed'
Gary Kleck, author of 'Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America'
David B. Kopel, author of 'Guns: Who Should Have Them?'
Joyce Lee Malcolm, author of 'Guns and Violence: the English Experience'
Roger McGrath, author of 'Gunfighters, Highwaymen, and Vigilantes'
Larry Pratt, author of 'Safeguarding Liberty'
Paxton Quigley, author of 'Armed and Female'
Eugene Volokh, author of 'The Commonplace Second Amendment'
Jeff Wayne, comedian, CD: 'It's O.K. to be a White Male'
James Q. Wilson, author of 'Crime and Human Behavior'
This movie is worth watching, although most 2nd Amendment advocates probably already know the information here. Watch it with someone who hasn't made up their mind on the issue, or use it to start discussions with an anti-gun friend.
Movie Review: ...shall not be infringed Summary: 4 Stars
How many years have we been told that guns are bad? How many of us believe this without ever challenging ourselves as to why we believe it? Most of us are lucky enough to have never been in a situation where a gun could have changed the outcome of a horrific event in our lives such as, "if I had a gun I may have never been raped", "if I had a gun I wouldn't have seen my parents being killed in front of my own eyes". We typically aren't forced to really think about protecting ourselves so we live our lives happily in a daze.
Year after year we have allowed our elected officials, who work for us and suppossedly represent us, take away our constitutional right to protect ourselves.
I hoped that Larry would have proposed a scenario to the nay-sayers on the street..imagine you are shopping at a grocery store in an idyllic suburban community and a person takes out a Samurai sword and starts slicing people to death with it. I'm in the store and I am in the same aisle as you. The attacker starts running towards you, you're next to die. What do you do?..run!! Of course. Now imagine that just two minutes earlier I gave you this interview and in it I mentioned that I always carry a gun. Now, the attacker is coming after you, you're next to die, I'm still in the aisle what do you do? You scream, Larry shoot the guy!! Of course.
Seem crazy? A few years ago at an Albertson's in Irvine, CA an employee came to the store and killed several people with a Samurai sword. The would be victims were throwing cans of tuna fish at him. Eventually it was a gun that took him down and stopped the carnage.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being able to protect yourself. Larry, thank you for reminding me that it is OK. It is ignorant to think that nothing bad will ever happen to you so you are allowed to be indifferent.
The only negative comment I have is that I wish that he would have spent more time on the English man who was sent to prison, with a charge of murder, for shooting two burglars in his house that had been broken into 7 times. This story infuriated me and I wanted to know more.
Movie Review: Emotion & Logic Summary: 4 Stars
Larry Elder revealed some dirty little facts that I never knew about guns. The firsthand accounts & arguments seldom heard, were sobering & effective. The allies of gun control laws are an unsavory bunch. He convinced me that I am too complacent about the 2nd amendment.
An epiphany for me was that, in my own mind, I had abbreviated it. Larry reminds us of the meaning & importance of the "shall not be infringed" portion of the 2nd amendment.
This will be a great DVD to watch with a liberal friend - or 2.
If his Mom was in the movie, he'd have got the covetted 5th star.
