Movie Reviews of Metalocalypse: Season 2

Movie Review: From someone who has disliked AND loved SEASON 2...
Summary: 4 Stars

You find a range of reactions when you read the reviews for Metalocalypse: Season 2. For some fans, MOAR METALOCALYPSE is enough reason to pitch multiple tents whilst dishing out the necessary cabbage for the set. For others who are a bit pickier and appreciated the first season for its distinct qualities, the second season does offer an unwanted change of pace.

I was disappointed and even disgusted by the first few episodes when this season was first aired. After giving up on tuning into the rest of the season, I started re-watching the first season over and over and over again to get my fix. Eventually I realized I wanted to see where the story goes beyond "The Metalocalypse Has Begun." Thankfully there was more to be had, and it was more than filler. The incredibly epic note the first season ended on definitely heightened my expectations, but if I was able to get over my dislike of the second season, you can too (if the dislike factor applies, that is).

In the end you'll find this DVD set = more Metalocalypse, which is more than great. If you like the show in general, get this whenever your budget allows it. It may grow on you if it hasn't struck a chord already, and the production quality has been cranked up quite a bit. The series is still very true to itself, it's just more comfortable with itself this time around. The quality of the writing hasn't diminished as some say. If anything has truly changed, it's the pace of the storytelling and the scope of Dethklok's activities. In retrospect, the first season was more... intimate? I'd like to strive for a better word, but after the first season the second may seem less personal and more shock-happy on your first intake.

Let me reiterate the following: If anything has truly changed, it's the PACE of the storytelling and the SCOPE of the show and its content. The former (PACE) change can make this season feel rushed and sloppy. The latter (SCOPE) can be overwhelming as you don't get as many chances to connect with the characters (ex: "Dethday", "Skwisklok", "Dethkids" from the first season, all of which are focused on individual characters). Any season two episodes having to do with the characters' personal lives are throwbacks to/continuations of relationships established in season one episodes, which only goes to show how rich those were.

ex: S1's "Dethclown" to S2's "Cleanzo."

All in all, no matter what else is said, it's still METALOCALYPSE. Keep in mind season two has its own character, distinct from season one (the first wave of Metalocalypse was a getting-to-know-Dethklok affair). I'm enthralled by both batches of the show for their individual merits. Trust me, naysayers of the now! They exist!

Movie Review: Push and pull
Summary: 4 Stars

The cartoon show with the best riffs in town is back and primed for another assault on the worlds pay TV channels. Sliding all the way to a four star release by the skin of its teeth this double DVD release of season two of Metalocalypse exerts a certain push/pull effect on the viewer. Certainly there aren't enough laugh out loud moments to really rate this as five star entertainment and the lack of guffaws is an issue - as is the creators seemingly trying to walk a tightrope between putting lots of insider references into the show and trying to appeal to a wider audience, the latter hope I would suggest is a futile one.

Advantages of the second series is that the audience now knows what they are getting and the characters foibles are ones that we now look forward to. All the main players have been introduced and there are a number of peripheral people who make regular appearances, their very familiarity making them connect with the viewer. Also by now the viewer has figured out the accents of Skwisgar and Toki and the incessant mumbling style of voice given to Murderface. Though for your first viewing the subtitles do still come in handy.

Your viewpoint on this series will to a certain extent rely on your link to your inner 15 year old. The flippant self absorbed attitudes and cartoon violence as humour schtick works for me but I can see many people feeling it is just a tad too juvenile and the resolutions of the plot of some episodes a bit too contrived. Still if you have an affinity for the heavy rock genre you are sure to find plenty here to amuse you and as silly entertainment it certain hits the spot if you fall into that category. And the menu is easily navigated though the bonus features of meagre.

Overall I'm not sure whether this concept has the legs for too many more series but for the time being I'm still on board.

Movie Review: Good, but flawed.
Summary: 4 Stars

The music is amazing, the episodes are funny, and the story is good. However, if you want to see some good special features, you will find that there are practically none. First of all, they're ALL hidden, and though easy to find if you know the definition of "Easter egg", once they are found, only one...maybe two are actually worth watching. There is one that shows Ofdensen (band manager) trying to fit in with the band after Dethsources, and the other worth watching, is the music video for Murmaider (from the concert). All the other features are completely useless and a waste of time. And if you were expecting a revelation hidden somewhere like the one with Selatcia in Season 1 DVD, don't hold your breath. Nowhere to be found.

Movie Review: Not as good as Season One
Summary: 4 Stars

Season Two was entertaining, but it didn't captivate me like Season One did. Maybe I need to watch the episodes a few more times. I agree with "Mr Treize" in that a lot of the episodes just stop at random spots, as if the episodes were written too long and just cut off at the 11 minute mark. The few stories that spanned multiple episodes were much better.

One thing that has annoyed me since I got the first season is the censoring of the swear words. There are uncenssored bonus features, but not the main episodes. I get that it is necessary for TV, but I would like unrated episodes on DVD.

Movie Review: Still has bad / weak subtitles.
Summary: 4 Stars

The widescreen aspect ratio is definitely a much-needed correction from the first season. This season is funny (although not as good as the first season) and the music is good.

My big complaint is that the subtitles are still wrong like from the first season, especially in the lyrics for the "Deththeme," as if whoever put in the subtitles just searched google and found a common misinterpretation. Also, I wish the words for all the songs were in the subtitles instead of just saying "[singing indistinctly]." Could the creators PLEASE edit the subtitles for the next season?
