Movie Reviews of Metalocalypse: Season 2Movie Review: TWISTED HUMOR Summary: 5 Stars
Metalocalypse is a disaster. But it's a great one. It's basically a fairy tale about a death-metal band ( that also happens to be a real band, in the real world... put together by Brendon Small..., the same guy who created the Adult Swim series called Home Movies ), called Dethklok, and the their total failure at everything they try to do, except playing their special brand of music. That's the one thing they're good at. But , despite their naive and childish views of the world and their self-centered focus on their desires, from wanting to be fashion designers, public relations experts, politicans, to playing practical jokes on each other all the time, they are basically well-meaning guys who do not really want to see people get hurt and prefer not to engage in violence ( at least not against innocent bystanders or their fans ) ..., though they sing about bloodshed, death and violence at every concert. Their fans, in the series, are another matter. They are lunatics and often end up dying in a bloodbath due to some unforseen problem at a Dethklok concert. Every episode has a short animated music video vocaled by Brendon Small, who also plays guitar.
There are a lot of blood and guts splattering around in this series, there are also scenes of torture and lots of bad language. So, why do I recommend it? Because it's a great satire of real "metal" bands and their obnoxious excessive lifestyles. These guys are so dumb at everything except music, you can't help but laugh as they simply try to do ordinary things, like go shopping..., and totally screw it up.
Interesting note; Mark Hamil ( of Star Wars fame ) , and veteran actor Malcolm McDowell perform many of the voice overs for characters ( other than the band members ) , in this series. Brendon Small voices three of the band characters, ( Nathan Explosion, Skwisgarr, and Pickles ) and also voices the band's manager ( Charles Foster Offdensen).
The disks worked very well. In fact the aspect ratio is for widescreen, which is the first time I've seen this in an animated series. The audio was excellent, especially during the music videos.
