Movie Reviews of Merlin's Apprentice

Movie Review: If you expect it to be as good as Merlin, think again...
Summary: 1 Stars

I came across this movie on T.V. and was so excited that there was a sequel to Merlin, a film I thought was fabulous. I was completely wrong. This move is so flawed, I don't even know where to begin.

First off, the story in no way correlates with the first movie, except for the fact that Sam Neil and Miranda Richardson have parts in it. You could fall into the plot holes. So, Merlin leaves Camelot in the care of Arthur with the belief that everything is secure. He goes a takes a "nap" and accidentally sleeps for 50 years. He wakes up totally confused and puzzled (which he keeps telling us over and over by stating his questions aloud). Camelot has gone way down hill. Blah, blah, blah. Enter Jack, a thief with magical abilities. It's later revealed that he is the love child of Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, played by Miranda Richardson. By the way, in this movie, the Lady is evil and resembles Queen Mab more than she did in the first film. So, Camelot is sacked by crazy wood-dwelling people, the rulers are corrupt, Merlin dies half way through, etc. Jack along with Gawain's granddaughter, her lover blacksmith, a squire named "Brian" (whose really a very masculine looking female named Brianna) go on a quest to restore the lost grail (which Arthur supposedly found earlier)and save Camelot. A great battle errupts with the crazy people, everyone dies, Jack saves them with the grail, and shacks up with a very masculine Brianna to "sow some seeds" (...enough said).

The plot is overly drawn out and boring, the characters/actors lack any depth or redeeming qualities, the writing is horrible and cheesy, and Merlin really lacks any substantial part (plus he's a bumbling idiot). This movie was a complete waste of time. There is no mention of any of the characters in the first film (i.e. Nimue, Mab, Frik, etc.) I advise any who saw the first movie...dont bother with this one.

Movie Review: Really bad sequel
Summary: 1 Stars

This reviewer is a fan of the King Arthur movies. Having seen the first Merlin, and being a fan of Hallmark movies, I rented this DVD the first chance I got. It was quite disappointing. The storyline does not mesh with the original Merlin and the entire foundation of this movie conflicts with the original. For instance, in this one Merlin wakes up in cave after a very long sleep alone, whereas the original leaves of with Merlin finding his love Nimue. Also, this movie mentions that Arthur had found the Grail, when in the original, Galahad had found the Grail. The castle at Camelot also looks quite different.

Even taking aside the discrepancies in the storyline, this movie is not that good. The music was lackluster and altogether forgettable. Second, the romance scenes between Nimue and Merlin in the first movie were good, but were almost nonexistent here. Third, the dialogue was quite cheesy; especially the part about saving Camelot in the end. Fourth, the sword fight scenes looked all too choreographed. Last, the part about the Grail hidden behind a waterfall was too fake. All in all, not really worth the time to watch this movie.

Movie Review: Even as a standalone move... terrible
Summary: 1 Stars

The first thing to note is most people don't realize there is a sequel to Hallmark's Merlin until they see it at Blockbuster. That should tell you something right there.

The move as a sequel to Merlin is non existent, it's a sequel only in name. As a standalone movie, it's terrible. The dialog is childish, repetitive, and boring. The acting is terrible and the actors seem to acknowledge their meritocracy while acting.

The plot is predictable and has all the classic characteristics of a cheesy, terrible movie. I.E, the fight scenes in slow motion, the super tacky death scenes, the super evil vs super good characters, the hazy storylines that don't quite make sense. The most frustrating part of the entire movie is we don't realize the motive of the "bad" guys until 20 minutes before the end. Finally, the characters kept rehashing the same conclusions as to why Camelot was poisoned over and over and over again. Please, if it wasn't right the first time, why the 10th? Need I go on...

Movie Review: a disgrace
Summary: 1 Stars

of course im a huge fan of the original merlin movie, and so when i saw this hoped it would would be good. it was terrible. a disgrace to the original. and even of it werent an attempted spinoff of merlin, it would still be terrible. to much attempted comedy that wasnt at all funny. a stupid main charecter. and on top of all that, it just all looks fake. not just the special effects, but costumes, dialoge, and set designs. i noticed that they attempted to use some of the same techniqies as the original, such as filming the shadows of trees move, then speeding it up. but it still held nothing in common with the original. as allways, rent it before you buy it. i made that mistake. you might like it, but i doubt it.

Movie Review: Disappointing...
Summary: 1 Stars

This film is going to be really frusterating for those who enjoyed the first film. I loved the first Merlin and I couldn't wait to watch this one. I was really disappointed to find that this "sequel" barely acknowledges anything that took place in the first feature. Didn't King Aurther die? Where is Merlin's wife? Not to mention the character of Merlin is highly downplayed to make way for Jack, his apprentice. Sam Neil is one of my favorite actors and could have really saved this movie if given a better script. The effects are cheesy and the acting is terrible. It's almost as if this is an entirely different version of Merlin played by the same actor. If you love the first film, stay away from this one!
