Movie Review: Get Back With The Men In Black!
Summary: 5 Stars
"Men In Black II" is just as good, if not better, than the original movie. Most of the characters from the first film return to great effect. Agent Jay (Will Smith) is having trouble finding a suitable partner after the retirement of Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones). Agent Jay is eventually partnered up with Frank the Pug, the talking dog briefly seen in the first film. The worms, seen in the coffee room in the first film, are also back. We get to see them living it up in their swinging bachelor pad. Lara Flynn Boyle plays Serleena, an alien who lands on earth and assumes the form of a Victoria's Secrets lingerie model. She is an intergalactic dominatrix intent on destroying the earth. The head of the MIB agency, Agent Zed (Rip Torn), decides that Agent Kay must be brought out of retirement to help thwart Serleena and her group of outlaw aliens.Once Tommy Lee Jones' transformation from postmaster Kevin Brown back to Agent Kay is completed, the movie kicks into high gear. He immediately intimidates Agent Jay into letting him drive the new company car. The chemistry between the by-the-book veteran and his renegade partner is even more effective than in the original movie, now that they know each other so well. The plot twists multiply until the movie reaches it spectacular conclusion. The special edition has a second disc which includes an alternate ending, behind the scenes footage and a hilarious blooper reel. I, for one, hope there will be a Men In Black III.
Summary of Men in Black II (Widescreen Special Edition)
DVDMore remake than sequel, Men in Black II safely repeats everything that made Men in Black the blockbuster hit of 1997. That's fine if you loved the original's fresh humor, weird aliens, and loopy ingenuity, but as sequels go, it's pure déjà vu. Makeup wizard Rick Baker is the only MIB alumnus who's trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The quest of a multitentacled alien--on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle--for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissue-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects--mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the MIB magic has worn a bit thin. --Jeff Shannon
