Movie Reviews of Melvin and HowardMovie Review: upbeat movie about a pos Summary: 4 Stars
in the movie, melvin's wife calls him a loser---and he is; he has two cars repo-ed over the years, then gets money to have a nice home, and he wastes his chance for a better life by buying a third fancy car and a boat! but, the movie plays like something written by woody allen, so everthing does come off as upbeat and fun.
of course, this movie, though "based on a true story", is probably only 5 percent real, especially when one episode takes place on a very-fake game show that is an obvious, unreal, mix of "lets make a deal" and "the gong show."
Movie Review: Souped up santa sley Summary: 4 Stars
I agree with the previous reviewers that this movie is quality. However, the video presentation on this latest DVD is poor. The dark shots show a fuzzyness/dullness that caught my attention. It is less noticable as the movie goes on. No complaints with the sound.
Movie Review: Fun movie. Summary: 4 Stars
Howard Hughes. Mary Steenburgen topless. Jason Robards. What more could you want in a movie? Did I mention Mary Steenburgen topless?
Movie Review: Mary Steenburgen Striptease Summary: 3 Stars
This one is worth it for the Mary Steenburgen, striptease scene. She normally plays the harried wife in various comedies, but this role is strictly Utah trailer trash, and it is delicious. Her husband, Melvin the Milk Man of the Year can't keep a job, so she goes off to make a living anyway she can, shuffling her ten year old daughter off to Melvin. Melvin divorces her, takes her back and she's off again mostly because Melvin spends like a drunken sailor. Paul LeMat had a number of likable fool roles in the late 70's and early 80's. He's chewing gum and singing cowboy songs while they repo his vehicles. A chance meeting with the legendary Howard Hughes, millionaire in the desert is the plot device that propels this cute little film.
Sure, downtrodden folks dream of hitting the lottery or inheriting money from an unknown relative, but it is possible that a desperate man in real life, Melvin Dummar, may have forged himself into Hugh's will, but I doubt it. How did he duplicate Hugh's handwriting? No matter, this slice of life is just that, a little Americana from 1980.
Movie Review: Oscar? Why! Summary: 3 Stars
This is an Okay dvd. It wouldn't be on my top 10. I really didn't see a great performance by Mary Steenburgen. I guess the strip segment was there to make sure you remembered her. I have to say I do and did. I haven't seen the "VHS" version so I'll just say the movie was okay.
