Movie Review: 1960's California Country Music

MELODY RANCH was a half-hour country music television program during the late 1960's that originated from Los Angeles. I'm not certain if the series was syndicated nationally like the Nashville-based country programs or it just aired in California markets. This dvd contains song performances from approximately four episodes (unfortunately while we may be getting every song from these episodes these are not the full episodes as there are no opening or closing credits). The footage is in color and appears to have been shot on videotape instead of film which makes the image less than it could have been but then there is little doubt they were expecting these to be viewed some 40 years in the future. The image quality is very good however just not as sharp as film would have been. Most of the songs are sung live although a few are lip-synched.
Glen Campbell, Lynn Anderson, Tex Ritter, and The Dillards are the guest stars from the episodes. The disc also features songs from series regulars Billy Mize, Cathie Taylor, Bennie Smith, Carl Cather, and veteran star Johnny Bond, all of whom (except for Bond, whose best glory years were the 40's and early 50's) were for the most part regional artists rather than nationally known stars although Mize did have two songs crack the Billboard country top 40. (The guest stars here also have California ties, by either recording or living there.)
Lynn Anderson is the standout artist here, only 20 years old at the time she clearly shows why she so quickly became one of the biggest female singers in the genre, tearing into the complex auctioneeresque "I've Been Everywhere" and accompanying herself on guitar to sing her first hit "Ride Ride Ride". Veteran western movie star Tex Ritter was now a Grand Ole Opry star in Nashville and returns to California to sing two of his 60's recordings including the much loved "Just Beyond the Moon". The well-known The Dillards were a folk act rather than a country one but they crossed that invisible border smoothly here and are particularly good covering Porter Wagoner's "Dooley". Mize had a very smooth, pleasant voice and it's surprising it didn't enjoy greater national success. It's also neat to finally see the elusive Cathie Taylor, who never had a national hit but was so well-regarded by the California country music industry the region's Academy of Country Music once named her "Top Female Vocalist" over several big selling artists.
