Movie Review: Choose your next spoof carefully, Friedberg and Seltzer. It may be your last as filmmakers.
Summary: 1 Stars

Who made this movie, 11-year-old boys? I had to turn it off after about 10 minutes. And yes, I had already witnessed massive vomiting, and two independent testicle gags in that time. One of which included a penguin. Which is interesting, considering birds have internal gonads regardless of sex. But I suppose the creators weren't going for realism since the penguin also calls Leonidas a "cracker" (yes, the racial slur) and mentions eating Taco Bell as it shat on his face.

Also, having so many "current" pop-culture references decreases the "lasting appeal" of a work-of-art such as this.

History has never been so... hysterical! Prepare to fight for honor, fight for glory, and fight back tears of laughter watching this gut-busting spoof comedy that skewers pop culture's biggest icons.

In Meet the Spartans, the heroic Leonidas, armed with nothing but leather underwear and a cape, leads a ragtag group of 13 - count'em, 13! - warriors to defend their homeland against the invading Persians, whose ranks include Ghost Rider, Rocky Balboa, the Transformers, and a hunchbacked Paris Hilton.

You won't find a funnier Greek war film even if you live to see 300!

With Meet the Spartans, the creators of Date Movie lampoon penguins, Paris Hilton, American Idol, Britney Spears, Dancing with the Stars, Stomp the Yard, Brangelina, Lindsay Lohan, product placement, Sylvester Stallone, Transformers, and pretty much every other obvious target that's emerged since they made their last flick, Epic Movie. The main subject of mockery is 300, the visual-effects laden Greek warrior movie, the relentless homoeroticism of which is not-so-subtly pointed out with a mixture of scatology, phallic humor, painted-on six-pack abs, disco songs, blows to the groin, and spitting--lots and lots and lots of spitting. There's nothing remotely clever about Meet the Spartans, and even fans of pop-culture cuisinarts like Scary Movie may feel the genre is losing its oomph, but if you're looking for a shotgun blast of lowbrow gags, this is it. Along for the ride are Sean Maguire (The Class), Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Ken Davitian (Borat), Diedrich Bader (Napoleon Dynamite), and Carmen Electra, without whom no movie of this kind would be complete. The only person who emerges with any credibility is comedienne Nicole Parker (Mad TV), who does a pretty spot-on impression of Ellen DeGeneres. --Bret Fetzer
