Movie Reviews of Meet Joe BlackMovie Review: A great mix of emotions. Summary: 5 Stars
The actors do a great job in this movie. They convey so many feelings throughout the story. Joe seems to be caught up in tension and conflict with both Drew and Bill at the same time while trying to win the affection of Susan and quickly falling in love.At first, Susan is suspicious about Joe even though she is falling for him. She decides to let her feelings take their course even though she knows so little about this stranger. Then she has to be careful about sharing her feelings about Joe with her father because he doesn't want her falling for Joe. Drew starts out being congenial with Joe but as he feels threatened by Joe's presence at work the tension builds. When Joe shows interest in his girlfriend Susan, the conflict really heats up. As feelings between Susan and Joe intensify, Joe and Bill clash. Eventually the whole thing blows and there's an angry discussion between the two. This scene is excellent! These two extremely talented actors verbally duking it out with each other is truly sensational. While speaking their minds they maintain such a sophisticated demeanor. It's impressive to watch. Later the two team up and do sort of a stand up comedy routine that's hilarious. They do it so seriously, and the gestures are priceless. Don't take it seriously, just have a few laughs!
Movie Review: One Of The Greatest Metaphysical Dramas/Romances Summary: 5 Stars
One of the greatest romantic/tragic/inspirational masterpieces, "Meet Joe Black" stars Anthony Hopkins in probably his most outstanding performance as William Parrish, a man scheduled by the supernatural mechanics of fate to die - until the Grim Reaper (Brad Pitt, in probably his greatest performance) presents himself, not as some dark and malevolent force, but as an integral part of nature - who wishes to know what it's like to live as a mortal. The Reaper, aka Joe Black, offers Parrish a deal in which he'll extend his life, so long as Parrish agrees to act as Black's guide in the terrestrial world. The deal is struck, but complicated when Black (inhabiting the body of a man who briefly met William's daughter Susan Parrish - brilliantly played by Claire Forlani - and who shared a mutual attraction with her) himself meets Susan, and the two begin to develop feelings for one another. Intense, gripping supernatural drama - rich in virtually all known emotions - about characters one quickly grows to care very much about. It's at times dark and tragic, but manages to never be outright depressing. At other times it's bright and hopeful, and comedic and sexy. An outstanding movie that has much in common, thematically, with "Ghost" and "The Green Mile" (both also extremely recommended).
Movie Review: Very romantic and impressive Summary: 5 Stars
I have so much to say after watching this movie. I have seen the critics and the results are extremely different. Some people like it but some hate it, extremely.Hopkins, without doubt, still the best. Bard Pitt is surprising good, especially when he plays the Death part. He acts like he really doesn't know how to do things in human world. He is so naive and innocent. He make the two differnt role totally differnt, even though with the same appearance. Claire Forlani is even better. I have never notices her existence on the big screen even though I have seen the rock. This movie kept my eye on her, especially her smile when she saw her love " Joe Black ". It looks like she is really deeply in love with her in real. The movie doesn't have many spaces for her to develop but she did so well on her part. Even without any words or gestures, you can feel her strong and intense passion by just seeing her expression. I like to know more about her due to the information on the DVD's intorduction part is not enough. Also, I would like to see her other movies because her excellent performance in this movie. In short, this movie becomes one of my favorites. Two-thumbs up.
Movie Review: Addictive, for all the right reasons. Summary: 5 Stars
Meet Joe Black
I keep coming back to this DVD. It is uncomingly wise and illuminating as the characters interchange with each other. Joe Black, played very well by Brad Pitt, is Death, in human form. He wants to feel the experiences and learn about both the human person he has impersonates and the person (Hopkins) he come to deliver to the afterlife. Anthony Hopkins and Pitt, as well as Claire Fiorani, the beautiful daughter of Hopkins, perform exceedingly well in their roles. The ending brings the movie full circle, bringing to Claire what she thought had captured during their first meeting in the coffee shop. True love with a remarkably handsome man she met briefly, but indelibly at a coffee shop. This film brings out the best and the worst of the characters as the movie moves through all the challenges they meet. I've watched it many times and never tire of the remarkable performances and a script that suits them. Thank you for considering my opinion. S.Johnson
Meet Joe Black
Movie Review: ANTHONY HOPKINS PUTS ON AN ACTING CLINIC Summary: 5 Stars
MEET JOE BLACK has a lot going for it. Brad Pitt for one. Anthony Hopkins for another. Mr. Hopkins, arguably our greatest living actor, puts on an acting clinic in MEET JOE BLACK that should be required viewing by every drama student. Every inflection in his voice, every gesture, every expression is rich with theatrical meaning. He gives a masterful performance. Pitt is no slouch in this either. It is like dueling actors, the old and the young. Throw in two more things. Claire Forlani plays Hopkin's daughter who falls for Pitt (poor girl!). She has a face that is beautifully tragic or tragically beautiful; whether she is smiling or frowning, she seems about to cry. She gives a stunning performance and adds a major dimension as the love interest. The other is that, if you like modern art, you will love the abstract paintings shown prominently in MEET JOE BLACK. The collection of paintings add an unusually strong input from a competing visual medium. Oh, and did I say that the production values are good? A love story involving life and death and how to live life. MEET JOE BLACK is a winner. See it, rent it, own it. They don't make too many like this one. Highly recommended.
