Movie Reviews of Meet Joe Black

Movie Review: Anthony Hopkin's Oscar worthy performance
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll admit that only morbid curiosity led me to watch this movie upon it's initial release. The premise of this remake sounded interesting, but the over the top costs and production problems had been tabloid fodder for months. When it didn't do blockbuster business, not many people were surprised.

It's a shame that this movie didn't do better than mediocre reviews and lukewarm boxoffice receipts. There I sat in the audience marveling at the gorgeous design and antiques, not to mention the exquisite costume design. So many films these days go for established designers, but this movie used a studio designer much like the days of the old Hollywood system. The attention to detail is exquisite.

As for the acting, it all boiled down to one scene for me. Anthony Hopkins describing the first time he'd ever had a lamb sandwich to Brad Pitt. It turns into one of the most beautiful remembrance speeches of a widower for the wife he still grieves. Needless to say even this heartless cynic got a bit misty. To have a man express such love without sounding condescending or corny is quite a feat. It's enough to make you believe in the power of a good actor.

Brad Pitt also deserves kudos for this role. Despite living through a personal hell and sustaining an injury, he does a great job in his double role. I thought the scene in which Death says good bye to Claire Forlani's character was some of his best acting.

Movie Review: Dynamite romantic fantasy &music - What an experience!
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought this might be a sad movie, but when it started out and Hopkins is hearing voices it really got me intrigued. Actually the saddest part was early in the movie. After Susan and "Joe Cool" (Brad Pitt in the coffee shop) meet, share some personal thoughts, have some laughs and then (presumeably without exchanging phone numbers) go their separate ways. They each alternate looking back at each other leaving the scene. Pitt (character name unknown at that point) has such a forlorned look on his face as if he may miss the chance to see Susan again.

I really enjoyed the humor and tone of this movie... also the passionate romance that builds between Susan and Joe Black. The music is really intense too.

Claire Forlani is seems so natural in her role as Susan. Hopkins and Pitt are excellent together with their sometimes supporting and sometimes conficting roles.

The setting of the movie is GREAT! It's interesting seeing how the extemely wealthy live in such opulent surroundings. Most of the movie seems so real that you forget it's a fantasy. So you may have a hard time grasping parts that aren't believeable. I let go of reality for the full 3 hours and just accepted the notion that anythings possible in the movies! This movie is so full of feeling. I absolutely loved it.

The DVD extra segment on behind the scenes details was cool too.

Movie Review: Fine Acting From All
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has what many lack...heart. Yes, it is long, and I'm sure there will be many complaints about that. However, it is not too long, but actually just the right length of time to develop the story AND keep the viewer's interest.

The acting is formidable, especially by Hopkins. His character truly does posess many qualities that the average person should strive for...a commanding leadership and presence, honesty, sincerity, love for his friends and family, intelligence, and respect. Hopkins portrays this character with both flair and subtlety, which is not an easy task to pull off.

Pitt gets stuck with an even more imposing task while trying to pull of the character of Death. Overall, I think he does just fine in a tough role.

Forlani is just beautiful, and it is just so easy to fall in love with her in this movie...I know I did. Her tenderness and loving nature only reinforced her beauty. None of her films since have been able to drive me crazy about her the way this one does...

Most important, and sometimes overlooked, is the chemistry that these actors had on stage together. They worked extremely well together. What more can I say..."Meet Joe Black" is a fine movie that most will enjoy. Oh yeah, and the sets and scenery (especially that of the mansion) were phenomenal. Go watch it if you haven't seen it yet. Watch it again if you have...

Movie Review: Need I say more than, wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know how many times I have watched this movie. And every time I watch it, it never looses a bit of its greatness. No one can doubt Hopkins is an incredible actor; and he certainly brought his talents to the stage in this one. Every movie I have seen him in has been great. His characters always seem to be very similar in type: intelligent, intiguing, and certainly charming. As Bill Parrish, Hopkins definitely showed his stuff. Brad Pitt...I have loved every movie of Pitt's I have seen. Seven, Legends of the Fall, Fight Club...all stunning. While he seems to be a little absorbed in himself, he brings a great show to the screen. As "death" I am sure this was a tough role; but Pitt put it on like he was "death" himself. Clair Forlani...beautiful, beautiful, and you got it, beautiful. Her character's almost youthful naivity and innocence fit her incredibly in this movie. Didn't see much as to why she fell in love with the mysterious character of "death." But realize it was more the man in the coffee shop than "death," with whom she fell in love. Tears rolled down my cheeks the first time I watched it, and the last time, and everytime in between. If you get this one, expect a little bit of a overly light-hearted love story, but let your heart run with it. Enjoy.

Movie Review: Best Romantic Movie I've Seen
Summary: 5 Stars

Unlike any movie I've seen, this talks about life and death and how love can be appreciated by death. Brad Pitt played a wonderful job as the Spirit of Death (codenamed Joe Black by Anthony Hopkins) inside the body of man who Claire Fontani met in a diner somewhere in New York. Claire is a very beautiful actress and I hope she will do another romantic movie with her charm. For Anthony Hopkins, who plays as a rich CEO of a communications company, has done a good job as a man trying to deal with Joe Black in his house. At first, when Anthony Hopkins hears the voices of death in the beginning, he felt strange but he learns who the person is talking to is in his house and that he is Joe Black. The reason Death is in the body of the man from the diner Susan met is because the man got knocked out in an accident and Death occupies the body because he is on vacation. Joe Black soon gets aquainted with the essence of people and falls for Susan Parrish who was in love with this man who thought Joe was pretty weird with his obsession with peanut butter, jelly cookies, and nice tea. Susan leaves the boyfriend behind and loves Joe Black. However, Joe Black has to deal with Susan's Father's fate, which could be the end of his life during his vacation. This was a great movie because it talked about what love is and it shows who Death really is.
