Movie Reviews of Meat Loaf - 3 Bats Live

Movie Review: A study in the intensity of rock.
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD was released very quietly; if I hadn't seen an HDNet showing of it on cable, I'd have never known it existed. I've been a fan forever, so it's not hard to sell me on Meat Loaf. He's a man who polarizes people though - you either love him or hate him; there's no middle-crowd. That said, I think this is the DVD that is capable of the widest appeal to date.

Meat Loaf's voice was destroyed years ago by his own reckless overuse and abuse. I've seen concerts where you'd swear somebody took a mixmaster down his throat and shredded his vocal cords. You just have to know that you're not going to get a vocally pristine performance from the man these days. That said, 3 Bats Live offers Meat in quite strong vocal form. Not perfect by any stretch, but what's important about Meat Loaf isn't that he hits the notes like Celine Dion, it's that he is more invested in singing them to his audience than any other performer in the business today. He gives 100% into every single performance and really makes you believe that rock, sex, and having a good time are the only important things in the universe. His connection to and appreciation for his audience is absolutely genuine and one has to respect that he pushes himself on stage right to the bleeding edge and beyond.

The tracklist is quite good covering all the high points of the 3 Bat albums with a few covers tossed in for good measure (the Stones' "Gimmie Shelter" being the highlight). "Blind As A Bat" comes off as the album's shining moment for me; I thought it was an astounding performance of a great song. The joy of things is that there aren't any skip-over songs... Meat makes everything interesting.

The cinematography is astoundingly good. The picture is crisp and reflective of the HD mastering that was used. The colours are intense and the camerawork is first-rate. The greatest part of the DVD (and the part that sets this concert apart and above the Melbourne DVD) is the DTS audio mix which is phenomenal. This is a disc that you can pop in to show off your 5.1 system. The Melbourne concert was a profound disappointment in terms of the surround mix and that mistake has been dramatically fixed here.

If you're looking for a concert of perfect, flawless vocals sung by pretty young things that don't have a clue what they're singing about then this is not the disc for you. If you want to see one of the great rock performers of all time put in an ridiculously intense 2-and-a-half hours of recklessly-abandoned pure rock and roll in a beautifully mastered concert, then add this in to your collection.

Movie Review: Terrific Concert....
Summary: 5 Stars

But the US release is significantly worse than the UK release. I say this because the UK release comes with a bonus disc with the movie "in search of paradise" which is an excellent movie. However people from the US can't see it unless they buy the UK release and get a multi-regional DVD player. But the concert itself was INCREDIBLE. Meat Loaf sounds so much better than he does on many different youtube videos that I've seen, and he is for the most part, in tune. Sometimes he's a little off, but most singers are. The performance of I'd Do Anything for Love is the best I've ever seen. Better than Melbourne or any other performance he's done. I do wish In the Land of the Pigs was played, but I got to see him perform it so I'm not upset. I'd suggest getting this CD. I have a feeling that In Search of Paradise is coming out in theaters in the US which is maybe why it wasn't released on this DVD.

Movie Review: Meat Loaf at his best
Summary: 5 Stars

This version that was released in the US is only one disc and unfortunately does not contain the bonus documentary, In Search of Paradise. The documentary gives an amazing and informative look at his creative process. I would recommend buy the European version for the documentary
This concert video is excellent. It is clear to see from this DVD why he is selling out shows after 30 years. He is an amazing singer and performer. He puts his heart and soul into every song that he sings. He performs all of his greatest hits from the Bat Trilogy albums. The entire band, Neverland Express rocks. This is definitely a must have for any fan of his music. Anyone who loves rock and roll performed at its best would also love this DVD.

Movie Review: What's the deal with the US release here?
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay - I'm VERY excited to see this thing - however - the stats Amazon US has put up are quite suspiciuos. First of all - it lists a ONE HOUR running time - this doesn't seem right. Also - it lists it as a SINGLE DVD - when every other version of this has a 2nd disc with more music and 90 minute documentary on Meat...what's going on here?

Movie Review: Meat Loaf still Rocking!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Any fan of Meat Loaf live will enjoy this DVD concert. Meat sings all the hits with a few off of Bat Out of Hell III. Great concert and what a talented performer!

I'd also recommend Bat Out of Hell Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
