Movie Reviews of Me and You and Everyone We Know

Movie Review: A Glorious Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

After having stumbled across a hilariously negative review for this movie by a christian movie review site, for the entertainment value of hearing an artistic expression referred to as heathen talk, I quickly decided to watch the film on my own next time there was no one else who might be disturbed by all the 'child molestation' that happens in the film. I was ready to see a mediocre movie which was made less appealing to others because of topics of illegality.

But now, here I am, just having finished the movie on Netflix. I'm not a hipster, my tastes in movies and music veer on either side of the spectrum of indie vs. mainstream. I'm not a pedophile, though sometimes I wish I was a kid again and that I had a better father. And my self esteem isn't so low that I need to see people who seem worse off than me to feel good, since I could do that with much different movies than this. Like Children of Men.

First off, the last reason to gripe about a film like this is because you feel it's morally reprehensible. When I was their age, on the internet, I did similar things. At least compared to the boys. Chances are, your kids, or kids you know, are doing it too. Not ALL of them, mind you, but I'd say about half the visitors on very popular websites like 4chan.org are filled with 11 and 12 year olds who are computer savvy. And exploring one's sexuality is a natural part of animal development, if anything you are hurting your kids more by punishing them unless they suppress it. Sure they should keep such behaviors to others around their own age, not with the man in the movie who is all bark and no bite, but I will repeat again that it's natural to be curious about your own body and how it relates to others.

I liked the music, it seemed to fit well with the story which wasn't too cutesy at all. If you want cutesy, see '(500) Days of Summer.' Or Little Miss Sunshine, a very unrealistic 'indie comedy' which had even less impact because of the big name stars.

This film is about the ways we all look at ourselves and look at other people. It's about life, and the progression from young curiosity (all the kid roles) to unsure adulthood (the more middle aged roles) to death (the oldest roles). When watching this movie, it felt very natural, and I watched it for what it was, not thinking how pretentious a woman the director was just because her real life role was similar to what she did in the film. Not everyone can be so expressive, even if all they're doing is expressing themselves. If that wasn't the case, we wouldn't need sites like Facebook.

There's one quote in the movie which really opened my eyes because it wasn't something I'd considered before. "We wouldn't have the internet without AIDS. All the disease, fear of bodily contact, etc." It was along those lines, basically allowing me to realize just how true that could be. How we all want to know more and more about each other to stay protected. Not as friends but as potential enemies. Really cruddy way to live, I tell ya.

Anyway, long story long, I suggest anyone who hasn't seen this movie, see it. And see it by yourself so there's no one around who you feel you should impress by feeling the same way they do, because chances are they're thinking the exact same thing. Watch the film by yourself, really think about what's happening and how it can relate to real life, and how some people REALLY ARE quirky or offbeat. I would hope that those who gave this a negative review would go back and try watching it again as well, I don't care if you're christian, or if you were molested as a child, or if you're a child molester (since that seems to be what everyone is so hung up on.)

This is a movie for open minds. There is nothing graphic, and nothing which is meant to be arousing. Especially not with the kids. All the sexual elements are downplayed, which is the only thing I felt to be unrealistic, but I appreciate how the director had the courtesy to try and let people like some of those who ended up hating the film anyway to have a chance at this movie.

I've never been able to gush so much about a film, not since Magnolia. There is no one for me to impress. I don't have movie loving critic friends. My parents would hate this movie. It's just me and my humble opinion. Please, for the sake of humanity, give this a shot.

Summary of Me and You and Everyone We Know

Award-winning and critically acclaimed, Me You and Everyone We Know, is a poetic and penetrating look at how everyday people struggle to connect with one another in an isolating modern world. Christine Jesperson (writer/director Miranda July) is a struggling artist and cab driver who uses her talents and imagination to draw her dreams and objects of desire. One such object is Richard Swersey (John Hawkes, TV's "Deadwood"), a newly-single father of two boys who is hoping for amazing things, yet panics upon meeting the captivating Christine. But in a world where the mundane is transcendent and people seek meaningful connections despite the risk, anything magical can happen - and well - happen.
One of the most critically acclaimed films of 2005, Me and You and Everyone We Know is also one of the most original feature debuts you're ever likely to see. Winner of the Camera d'or Award for best first film at the Cannes Film Festival, it's an altogether charming display of talent for writer, director, and costar Miranda July, a performance artist making a promising transition to film. Her loose-knit tale of love and longing encompasses a large cast of quirky and memorable characters, foremost among them being Christine (July), a forlorn dreamer who falls in love with Richard (John Hawkes, from HBO's Deadwood), who's going through a traumatic divorce. Richard is desperate to be a good father to his seven- and 14-year-old sons, both of whom have experiences that push Me and You to an almost perverse level of audacity, but July handles their potentially troubling scenes with such delicacy and tact that they seem almost miraculously innocent. The whole film is like that: It never, ever goes where you think it's going to go, and every scene tingles with humor, affection and curiosity for its characters. As it turns routine days into joyous opportunities for discovery, July's remarkable film is not for all tastes, but if you're looking for something new, different, and defiantly out of the mainstream, this gentle comedy's for you. --Jeff Shannon
