Movie Reviews of Me, Myself & Irene (Special Edition)Movie Review: I had to see it to believe it Summary: 5 Stars
If I had HEARD about this movie I would have decided it was rude, disrespectful, obscene and vulgar. The truth is, it IS those things, but it's just SO FUNNY that it's so INTENSELY all those things. It's a parody of rudeness, disrespect, obscenity and vulgarity in movies. We're talking OVER THE TOP here. It helps that the camera work is beautifully done (some of the scenery is just gorgeous -- and as a backdrop for the slapstick, often disgusting humor of Carrey, it makes the joke doubly funny), the acting is good, Zellweiger is fun to watch (even as much as Carrey is), and the supporting actors are all very talented as well. The story itself is really hilarious. The fact that this movie is so well done, makes the obscenity easier to observe - and even funnier. I'm a pretty staid person. If you look at my profile, you'll see I'm a mother of six little kids. A wild night for me is watching SNL with my husband (and we can't usually manage to stay up that late) and I am telling you that this movie is EXTREMELY vulgar. But it's one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I'm the one who frowns at degrading jokes and comments, "that's just disrespectful, it isn't funny..." There were parts during this movie that I was laughing so hard I couldn't sit straight in my chair. I never laughed so hard at a movie in my life! The entire audience was rolling in their seats, too. What a trip! (By the way, in case you're not a mom and you've seen the movie, I can tell you that babies really DO look that way when they nurse! I almost fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard during that scene.) I can recommend this one to just about any adult -- but you can't go into it waiting to be offended - if you can't find the humor in stereotypes, then skip this one. If just the sight of a dildo is likely to make you faint, definitely do not go see this movie! Otherwise, I heartily recommend this one to you. We're buying ours as soon as it's released on dvd.
Summary of Me, Myself & Irene (Special Edition)WHEN RHODE ISLAND POLICEMAN CHARLIE BAILEYGATES DEVELOPS ASPLIT PERSONALITY DISORDER, HE GOES FROM GENTLE TO MENTAL. BUTSOON, CHARLIE FALLS CRAZY IN LOVE WITH THE BEAUTIFUL IRENE ANDMUST BATTLE FOR HER AFFECTIONS WITH HANK, HIS FOUL-MOUTHED, OVERSEXED ALTER EGO. In Me, Myself & Irene, Jim Carrey plays Charlie Baileygates, a cop for the best police force in the world (Rhode Island). In denial about his wife's affair, he's a nice guy who goes around trying to do the right thing but is taken advantage of every step of the way. Instead of confronting people, he takes the abuse, balls it up, and hides it in the pit of his stomach. His psyche can only take so much, though, and soon his alter-ego Hank pops out to do every libidinous thing Charlie would never do. It's a great premise for a Jim Carrey film. Unfortunately, it's not a great Jim Carrey film. Famous for the lowbrow, shock comedies like Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary, here the Farrelly brothers get lost in a series of lazy gags and an even lazier plot about some evil golf development and the woman, Irene (Renée Zellweger), who needs to be protected because she knows something about it. Some of the jokes hit (there's a bathroom scene that's 10 times funnier than the hair-gel gag in There's Something About Mary), but many more miss. There are some great concepts (his three sons are hip-hop geniuses) that don't go anywhere (they swear a lot). It's like the movie itself has a split personality--funny ideas trapped in a less-than-funny film. --Andy Spletzer
