Movie Reviews of Masters of the UniverseMovie Review: Long live Skeletor! Summary: 5 Stars
Wow! I remember this movie. I saw it as a kid, huddled in a friend's house and it was the best thing ever! As an adult, I admit, it's cheesy. Well, so was the cartoon it's based off of. But it's a good kind of cheese.
I never watched it for He-Man, Man-at-Arms, Teela, or any of the good guys. Heck no! I was a fanatic over the bad guys. Skeletor was my hero. Growing up, I didn't want to be She-Ra or Teela or anyone like that. I wanted to be Evil-Lyn.
In that aspect, this movie didn't fail. With the PG rating, Skeletor was able to be far eviler then his cartoon counterpart. He was no longer the fumbling fool and comidic device that we saw on Saterday morning. This was who Skeletor was meant to be; evil, cunning and down-right sadistic. He outshone He-Man and the other Masters. He was the best part of the movie!
Also, the audio commentary on the DVD is great and really helps understand what was going on back then and give you an insight in the mind of the creators.
Movie Review: He had the power in the cartoon, but what about the movie? Summary: 5 Stars
I have always enjoyed this movie since it first burst onto screens in 1987. I thought Dolph Lundgren was perfect as He-Man and Frank Langella was perfect as Skeletor and until I read somewhere about little annoyances I thought to myself, this film was perfect. Many people tend to point out that the film is nothing like the cartoons which dominated the early 80s - where was He-Man's faithful tiger - Battle Cat and what happened to Skeletors army of baddies such as Tri-Klops, Trap Jaw and so on.You CAN look at the film this way and make comparisons or, like so many others just sit back and enjoy a blast from the past. Lundgren and Langella aren't the only ones to take the credit - the late Billy Barty fits into the role of Gwildor superbly as does Meg Foster as Evil Lyn. The only annoying thing about this film is at the very end when Skeletor's head pops up and he says ' I'll be back' - unfortunately he never was.. This has to be one for your collection!
Movie Review: Fourteen years, and it's still got the power! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie has always been so cool to me since I was a kid because I obviously grew up with "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" cartoon show, and to have it on DVD is totally awesome! Granted the movie was totally differant from the toyline and cartoon serious, and to me it always borrowed from "Star Wars" in a way too! But then again, director Gary Goddard wanted to give it a realistic kinda gothic look while at the same time make it a great film for all the fans (myself included)! Personally, when I think of this film, it's more closer to what you could really get out of a childhood dream than anything. Dulph Lungren and Frank Langella will always be remembered as He-Man and Skeletor. No one can ever replace their performances! A film for all ages even for the "old" He-Man fans like myself! I just wish they could bring out DVD's for the cartoon episodes someday!
Movie Review: so corny, yet so much fun! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was once called, "a Star Wars for the eighties". Now, I'd have to disagree with that, because this movie is a bit too silly to be compared to Star Wars, which was a very lofty title. Nevertheless, this movie is just plain fun to watch. It's quite different from the cartoon, which is kinda disappointing, but in the long run nobody cares. It has everything you would expect from a campy, and pretty bizarre, comic-book style world. A super-strong hero with a magic sword, an array of weird bounty hunters out to get him, a diabolical fiend whose body is nothing but bones, a magic trans-dimensional key that sounds like a synthesizer from the Sharper Image, a pair of naive humans who are fascinated by the new world they've sicovered, and a wild showdown in a futuristic palace. You can't take it too seriously, but that just makes it all the more enjoyable. See it!
Movie Review: The New Genius has the Power! Summary: 5 Stars
Dolph Lundgren as He-Man is gold already. He is the newest genius to the Immortal Lord List and he proves himself worthy in this family science-fiction movie. The swordsman battles Skeletor (funny face) for a key that will control the universe. The key drops on Earth and is held by Julie (Courtney Cox) and the world is in her hands! Well, forget the plot because you know what happens. Let's get back to divinity. Dolph Lundgren is comedy when he talks and especially the moment when he yells, "I have the power!" Yes, you do. You're a deity now and it's up to you to entertain me. You are truly underrated. The battle scenes are decent and the battle between He-Man and Skeletor is obvious. This movie is a cross between "Star Wars" and "Conan the Barbarian." Dolph Lundgren laughs at an evil midget. Yes! This movie is fun for all ages.
