Movie Reviews of Masters of Horror - Dario Argento - JeniferMovie Review: Everything's hot butter face. Summary: 3 StarsLegendary horror director Dario Argento's first contribution to the MASTERS OF HORROR series was JENIFER. It's about a cop (Steven Weber) named Frank who rescues a hideously disfigured woman ("Jenifer" played by Carrie Anne Fleming) from being murdered and takes her under his WINGS. Get it? Steven Weber... WINGS... never mind. Eventually Frank becomes obsessed with Jenifer and tries to get her to be "normal". He brings her into his home, gives her clothes and food, and even has a sexual relationship with her. However Frank's obsession turns to madness when he realizes that no matter what, she will always be a monster and continue to eat cats and children.
I thought JENIFER was pretty good. It wasn't really scary or violent. It was just sort of creepy thanks to Jenifer's strange look and the impressive makeup effects. There ARE scenes of gore in the movie, but it's not the focal point and is only in the film to get the point across that Jenifer is undeniably sick. The acting isn't great but it's not BAD enough to make the movie suck, if you know what I mean. The character of Jenifer can't talk due to her disfigured face (or the fact that she actually doesn't know HOW to talk) and actress Carrie Anne Fleming does a good job of making up for that fact by being physical and communicating with her body and certain gestures. Speaking of her BODY, she's naked in a lot of the film and there are a decent amount of sex scenes, however I wouldn't exactly call them "erotic" considering how repulsive her face looks. It's more bizarre than anything. It's WRONG. All I can say is that Steven Weber would make an incredible wingman (there I go with the WINGS jokes again) because he OBVIOUSLY has no problem "taking one for the team".
As far as the gore, like I said there really isn't a lot except for a couple of scenes with Jenifer eating intestines (usually out of humans but she doesn't discriminate against domesticated cats either). And in an interesting note, on one of the Special Features, director Dario Argento talks about scenes that were cut from the film involving Jenifer performing oral sex on Frank and another scene where Jenifer is biting the penis off of someone. So even though the scenes were cut out of the final product you DO get to see them in the Special Features.
So JENIFER wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. I liked it. JENIFER is a creepy, twisted love story with a decent amount of nudity and some gross out moments. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in then you should check JENIFER out. There isn't anyone noteworthy in the cast but they all do a decent job for what it was. It's a little less than an hour long but I could have easily watched more. The DVD has a nice amount of Special Features also. The script is a little weak but one of the greatest horror directors of all time is behind the lens on this one. Win.

Summary of Masters of Horror - Dario Argento - JeniferSteven Weber of THE SHININGTHE STAND and DESPERATION stars as Frank Spivey a detective who rescues a strange young girl (Carrie Anne Fleming) with a horribly disfigured face and lusciously ripe body from a deranged killer. But when Spivey takes responsibility for the mentally challenged orphan she reveals herself to be a creature of untold carnal pleasures and unspeakable violent depravities that may lead him straight to hell. She is seductress psychopath and succubus all in one and her name is JENIFER. The legendary Dario Argento directs this jaw-dropper that features a haunting score by Claudio Simonetti of Goblin (DAWN OF THE DEADTENEBRE).System Requirements:Running Time: 58 MinutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre:?HORROR Rating:?NR UPC:?013131446197 Manufacturer No:?DV14461 Leave it to Dario Argento (Suspiria) to cook up a truly stomach-flipping installment in Showtime's Masters of Horror series. Argento's hour-long Jenifer has an uncluttered through-line that combines a relentlessly destructive film noir plot with zombie attitude. Steven Weber plays a cop who kills a man about to harm a disfigured woman named Jenifer. Weber finds himself strangely protective of the girl, who incidentally has enough sexual appetite to tempt him away from everything sane and holy. Unfortunately, she has other appetites as well, which spells trouble for the odd child (or housecat) who might be taken as a snack. Weber's downward spiral is predictable enough, but there's something in almost every scene that makes you shiver--either overtly (Jenifer chomping down on entrails) or indirectly (the way trees ripple as a car moves into the forest). Jenifer is played by Carrie Anne Fleming, wearing a prosthetic horror mask and flimsy negligee, an unsettling combination of repulsive/sexy that Argento exploits to the maximum. The trim script is by Steven Weber, from a short story by Bruce Jones; the excellent music is by Claudio Simonetti, whose ensemble Goblin did the music for other Argento films and the original Dawn of the Dead. --Robert Horton
