Movie Review: Superior artistry and depth

This film positively reeks of atmosphere, and a quite tangible sense of menace. It is a cruel, intolerant, and indifferent world. Your lot in life is cast at birth, and few there are brave enough to reach for more. The two leads in this film reach for more, from opposite directions, like cave-dwellers sensing the warmth of the sun for the first time. Orson Welles is extraordinarily powerful in this film, easily one of the most powerful performances I've ever seen. His depth of feeling is like a raging storm, yet never seems overdone,.... amazing! Joan Fontaine wears timidity like a suit of armor in an unforgiving world, the only world she knows. But underneath, and from an early age, she moves with integrity and courage. I thought she did a marvelous job. Beautiful quality filming, a moving story, and a powerful range of feelings absorbed by the viewer. If this film doesn't leave it's mark on you, I would have no idea how to respond to that..... I am indelibly marked.

She accepts a governess position at Thornfield Hall, where she soon finds herself falling in love with the brooding master of the house?the passionate Mr. Rochester. Jane gradually wins his heart, but they must overcome the dark secrets of the past before they can find happiness.This lavish and sensual new version of Charlotte Bront??s classic novel is modern and moody, timeless and romantic. Starring Toby Stephens as Mr. Rochester, Ruth Wilson as Jane, and Francesca Annis as Lady Ingram. (In fact, costar Joan Fontaine--who plays the title character--has maintained that Welles methodically did just that every day on the set.) Not that the film's official director was a hack: Robert Stevenson, who later had a busy career at Disney making numerous live-action hits for the studio, such as Mary Poppins, gets the credit. But there's no mistaking Welles's masterful hand in the film's bold and creative look, and there's no getting away from his enigmatic charisma as Rochester, the widower who takes in Jane as a governess to his daughter. An engrossing, gorgeous film, there's even a small role for Elizabeth Taylor at the beginning as Jane's unlucky, doomed friend at a cruel boarding school. --Tom Keogh
