Movie Reviews of Marty

Movie Review: There's Hope for Everyone!
Summary: 5 Stars

Marty is a refreshingly real movie about a middle aged bachelor-butcher, Ernest Borgnine, who has gone through life being mistreated by indifferent women. He lives with a mother who has married off the rest of her offspring and harasses the low self-esteemed Marty about his single status. "Marty" follows the bachelor life of this butcher as he tries to make everyone else around him happy until he meets a "dog" of a woman that is his female equivalent.
"Marty" reminded me of the current wave of independent films that follow realistic characters around in there depressing lives. Except, this film is truer to life in that it has real ups and downs. Life isn't really as those independent films portray with no hope and full of malignant people and depressing circumstances. Many people lead happy lives with hardships and trials similar to Marty; there is hope and happiness out there amidst the hard times.

Movie Review: Classic Simplicity
Summary: 5 Stars

Ernest Borgnine stars in this delightful character study of a butcher who yearns for love and family among the well-meaning, but shallow circle of friends. One night, he meets a plain woman, played by Betsy Blair and must then struggle between his true feelings and the need for the approval of his "friends."

Paddy Chayevsky's tightly woven script provides sparkling dialogue as Marty discovers a woman who, in a sense, completes him. "We are not the dogs everyone thinks we are," is a gruff but authentic sentiment that pervades the entire film and offers an uplifting spirituality of love and discovery in a cynical world.

The joy of this film is its simplicity. There are no complicated plot twists, no hidden surprises lurking at every turn -- and yet it manages to pull at the heartstrings with the joyful reality that comes from the emerging recognition of true love.

Movie Review: Timeless good story
Summary: 5 Stars

To some this might seem awfully dated---a thirty-something man living at home with his mother, going to mass every Sunday. But that's to miss the point...we all need love and often there are obstacles to our pursuit, sometimes in the forms of the people who claim to love us the most.

Here Marty, who really isn't that bad looking, meets, by accident a lovely sensitive young woman, who certainly isn't a "dog" and they fall for each other. But the forces around them---his best friend who had to spend Saturday night by himself, and his loving mother, who fears what will happen to her if he gets married---conspire to tell him this is not a good woman for him.

The film is a success that still rings true today because of its truthful simplicity. See it and get back to basics!

Movie Review: STILL RELEVANT! AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!
Summary: 5 Stars

At least 25 years have passed since I last watched this film and it is still relevant. I did not marry until my late 30's which was my choice, but I remember hanging around with my friends trying to figure out what to do each night. This film rings true in many ways for me and Ernest Borgnine does an excellent job in the title role. I have read other reviews stating there is a missing scene, but it has been so long I can't remember anything missing. It didn't seem to ruin the story, but I am not in favor of incomplete film releases especially something as important as this film! No matter,it is still a great movie with excellent characters and story.

Movie Review: 10 Stars
Summary: 5 Stars

This is how good this movie really is. I wish we could go up to 10 Stars in our reviews. I'm a classic cinema buff and "Marty" is a must-have in anyone's movie collection. From the writing to the directing to Ernest Borgnine's acting = all I can say is WOW. I fell in love with Marty Piletti, a homely guy with low self-esteem, a pushy Italian Mamma and a heart of gold. The true mark of a masterpiece is when the viewer is inmersed in the story and emotionally connects with the characters on screen. 'Marty' accomplishes this and more and I wish that more viewers would take the time to view gems like these.
Absolutely Amazing!!!
