Movie Reviews of Marnie

Movie Review: Sound Hitchcock Quality
Summary: 5 Stars

Sound, as well as colour, played an important part to get the viewer inside the head of the title character. Much has been said about the quality of the sound. It has been said that it is not crisp or clean. That is the way Hitchcock wanted it.

Bernard Herrmann did not compose a score for Hitchcock's THE BIRDS. Hitchcock did use Herrmann as a technical sound advisor on that film. With MARNIE Hitchcock had Herrmann act in that same capacity as well as compose a very good score.

The sound of a film is just as important as its visual look. A Production Designer not only designs sets, but also is in charge of costumes, props and the entire look of the film. Herrmann did this for all the sounds of MARNIE.

The extreme close-up shot when Sean Connery kisses Tippi Hedren accompanied by Herrmann's evocative and tender composition is a good example of his brilliant intuitive use of music. Herrmann's repetitive use of MARINIE's haunting theme is mesmerizing and is an integral part of the undertones of emotion and sexual repression that pervade this curious masterpiece.

Movie Review: A Haunting Love Story
Summary: 5 Stars

Marnie is one of those movies that stays with you forever. Even if you don't absolutely love Hitchcock, this little gem is worth watching. Yes, it is suspenseful in that most unique Hitchcock way, but it's the love story that captivated me the most. The lovely Marnie (played brilliantly by Tippie Hedren) is such a complex character that viewers alternately become enthralled with, frustrated by, and inevitably heartbroken for her. Marnie has never recovered from a traumatic childhood and she remains that traumatized little girl in a woman's body. She is still a little girl desperately searching for love, only she doesn't realize it. The only love she knows is her horse. And Sean Connery as Mark Rutland. Wow! He is every girl's "Knight in Shining Armor" as he tries to come to Marnie's rescue. The expressions on Mark's face as he looks at Marnie seem so genuinely real. It seems he would do anything for Marnie to help her get better and to make her love him. Louise Latham as Marnie's mysterious mother is also excellent. A haunting, beautiful love story. Highly recommended!

Movie Review: Intriguing Hitchcock psychological thriller.
Summary: 5 Stars

Tippi Hedren stars as Marnie, the title character in this film. Marnie is a compulsive thief, liar, and drifter. She goes from town to town, each time creating a different identity. Marnie is able to insinuate herself into various jobs, then she robs her employers and skips town.

Sean Connery plays Alan, who figures out that Marnie had robbed his company, among others. So he tracks her down. Falling in love with Marnie after he catches her, Alan wants to persuade Marnie to marry him. Marnie just wants Alan to let her go. But Alan wants to protect Marnie, so he offers Marnie a quickie marriage, or the alternative of being turned over to the law.

Tippi Hedrin is wonderful in her role as the neurotic, larcenous Marnie. Sean Connery is impeccably suave and smoothly handsome, as Alan. Both have an antagonistic on-screen chemistry between them, that keeps the viewer intrigued. Marnie is one of Hitcock's better psychological thrillers, from the 60s. It's well worth your time, and it's now available on DVD.

Movie Review: Great Hitchcock mystery-thriller-romance
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful movie. A thriller-mystery, but unusual for its psychological focus. Marnie (Tippi Hedren) is a compulsive liar and thief who takes a job as a payroll clerk, steals all the money, and then goes to another town and a new identity--until the rich young Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) catches on and, in effect, blackmails her into marrying him, not knowing that she is frigid and can't stand to be "handled." A very tense and unhappy marriage, as Mark tries, and finally succeeds, in finding out what troubles Marnie. Interesting from a feminist perspective, in that Marnie loves horses and her mother, but can't stand men. Marnie is revealed to be the killer of one of her mother-prostitute's customers. Man-killing and man-hating, yet finally "tamed" by Sean Connery. Hitchcock uses color to good effect. Marnie is also notable for the obviously fake backdrops during horse-riding scenes. Otherwise, typical Hitchcock style, with Hermann music.

Movie Review: A haunting, absorbing psychological story
Summary: 5 Stars

"Marnie" is a classic Hitchcock film that examines the motivations and ultimately the salvation of a deeply troubled young woman, "Marnie" (Tippi Hendren). Sean Connery in his prime plays the other lead, and is absolutely stunning in this role. And of course, the always lovely Tippi Hendren is irresistible as Marnie. Connery shows us his acting range by portraying a loving and vulnerable man, smitten by the troubled and manipulative Marnie.

In classic Hitchcock fashion, every scene in this film is thought out to the nth degree. Every camera angle and every conversation has a purpose; the attention to detail in this film is typical of the approach Hitchcock at his best took with his films. The storyline here never drags, and the compelling storyline combined with superb performances by Connery and Hendren make this film a real treat for the viewer.

Highly recommended. RJB.
