Movie Reviews of Marjoe / ThothMovie Review: As true as documentaries get Summary: 5 Stars
I was raised by a Pentecostal mother, and have since left the church. I say this only to say that this film is no BS. This kind of stuff happens all the time, in your city, believe me. Though the film is 34 years old, it is just as true today as it was then. The previous reviewers are right in saying that this film is amazing and compelling. While it is shot in the cinema verite style, it has wonderful moments of editorial subjectivity (like focusing on an expensive brooch while a preacher says she doesn't spend her money foolishly.) I was alternately delighted, pissed off, appalled and surprised by this film. While not a paragon of filmmaking craft, it should be considered one of the great documentaries ever.
Movie Review: Fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
Marjoe Gortner is the man! This movie is really great-I love it! Maybe we should send a copy to Benny Thank you Marjoe Gortner for making this timeless documentary. I watched it in the theatre in 1972 and love it just as much today on my DVD player! It will surely enlighten generations not yet born! The scene wherein Marjoe is at the revival-telling all the folks how god came to him as a little boy lying on his bed and told him to save the people is AMAZING!
I'm constantly amazed at the things people can believe!
Movie Review: Watch Marjoe with a pentecostal tounge talking friend! Summary: 5 Stars
To get the full effect of "Marjoe" make sure to watch it with a hard core pentecostal tounge talking friend.
Thoth is the story of a strange loser that lives with his mother apparently in hopes of one day being the throw-in movie in a DVD set with Marjoe. Thoth has a lot of talent but it's just that useless kind of talent that can't make you enough money to live on. Like if you were the goldfish eating champion or could blow the biggest bubble gum bubble in the world.
Movie Review: Great Documentary Summary: 5 Stars
Great documentary about Marjoe Gortner, who was the youngest ordained minister at age 4 later became a actor in movies like "Earthquake" with Charlton Heston "The Marcus Nelson Murders" with Telly Savalas and "Food Of The Gods" with Ida Lupino. In this documentary, we see Gortner in action in 1971 at tent revivals in the south counting money that he hussled from worshipers, he later quit the ministry out of guilt. Nice to hear this documentary will be fully digitally restored for dvd release.
Movie Review: Best ever version of this classic Summary: 5 Stars
I concur with all the other enthusiastic reviews of this documentary. What you need to know is that this film has been restored, literally transformed compared to the old VHS version of this. The colors are bright, the picture clear, the sound is crisp. What I like most about this movie is the way it messes with your mind, delightfully. Or as others have noted, the truth sure is strange, and you've got an all access pass to this here travelin' show.
