Movie Reviews of Marie Antoinette

Movie Review: Great film - if only it was in color!
Summary: 4 Stars

Purists will hate me for saying this, but I wish this film could be colorized. I caught this on TV many years ago and was stunned by how sharp and beautiful the costumes were. If only this pageantry had been captured in color! Other than that, it was gorgeous to look at and Shearer's acting was excellent (especially in the last scenes). I think she overacted in the beginning with the teenage girl coquettishness - "Oh Mama, think of it! I will be Queen of France" - but she got better and better as the movie continued until she really disappeared into the character at the end. I can't imagine any contemporary Hollywood productions topping this for production values!

Movie Review: Norma Rules
Summary: 4 Stars

This version while full of Hollywood excess at least gives a fairly accurate historical account of the unfortunate queen. Norma Shearer gives a marvelous performance as the doomed monarch as both a young girl and later as a broken woman who has lost all that is dear to her. The final superimposed shot of her thrill at someday being queen of France seen over the drum rolls heralding her execution reminds us of the arc she has had in the role. Also, the lavish production is MGM at its best. This cries out for Technicolor. Robert Morley is fabulous also.

Movie Review: Could almost see the color
Summary: 4 Stars

After seeing the "new version", I knew there had to be more. Couldn't find this older version for rent anywhere, and am very glad I bought it. It provided the complete story. The acting, story line and photography were excellent! Just wish it was in color....For all the money that must have been spent on costumes and sets, it would be WONDERFUL to see it in Review: COULD ONLY BE BETTER IF COLORIZED!
Summary: 4 Stars My husband attended the MGM Auction and we actually have a piece of furniture used in this movie.....it was fun to be able to "pause" and view it.

Movie Review: Let them eat spectacle!
Summary: 3 Stars

MARIE ANTOINETTE (1938) is a film to see repeatedly. Make no mistake; Robert Horton's able Amazon review is, in my opinion, very good. But "the parade of enormous sets and opulent gowns" does contribute more than simply "stodginess". In fact, for me, the appeal of this film lies in its setting. Think of the effect of the METROPOLIS (1927) sets on the viewer; but instead of Industrial, we have a Baroque architectural style. Unfortunately, the sets are so grandiose, like being in Versailles itself; one forgets to watch the actors. This competition for attention between the actors and their setting results in the actors playing a more minor part of the film; until the prison scenes; and that should not have been.

Relative to the other actors, the excellent performances by Joseph Schildkraut and Robert Morley stand out. This may be due to their acting style; their roles are played in "larger than life" fashion, and are therefore best able to compete with the setting: John Barrymore is hardly in the picture, Tyrone Power is woodenly handsome, Norma Shearer is fine. However, as I say, this film isn't about the actors or acting; it is about spectacle. And what a spectacle!

I have little to say regarding the expectation by some that Hollywood should have delivered an historically accurate film. Have they ever?
