Movie Reviews of Marie Antoinette

Movie Review: Glamour
Summary: 5 Stars

MGM by the time this film was put into production was known as "The Rolls-Royce of The Film Industry" and this film shows you why. It's a gigantic spectecle on the grand scale, what Metro was known for and every dime spent is up there on the screen, from the brilliant (if oversized) sets to the sumptous costumes and photography. Norma Shearer, the acknowledged "Queen" of MGM (Joan Crawford,he nearest rival, when asked by Shearer was always given first pass on plum roles retorted"Simple, she's screwing the boss, meaning Head of Production,Irving Thalberg to whom she was married)but that aside,Shearer is a treat, aging from a wide-eyed 16 year old on the threshold of destiney,to a prematurely aged woman facing death. WATCH IT!

Movie Review: Vive "Marie Antoinette!"
Summary: 5 Stars

This film is without question a triumph. It is by far the most realistic and accurate film of Marie Antoinette that I have yet seen (Coppola's recent film was a grand disappointment). However, this film is amazingly factual and true to events. The Costumes are incredible, and the scenic elements are on a scale to rival the beautiful palace of Versailles. The Actors are phenomenal. They portray their historical character in an excellent manner. Anita Louise is beautiful as Princesse Lamballe. I recomend this film to all. I should like to see it colorized in feauture to bring the incredible costumes and scenery to its full splendour. BRAVO for the regal beauty and princely spleandour of "Marie Antoinette."

Movie Review: Norma Shearer - Perfect
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film on T.V a long time ago in the wee hours of the morning...... What really impressed me was Norma Shearer. I knew who she was and heard she was a great actress but not until I saw this film did I believe it! One of the finale scenes in the movie I've never forgotten, when Marie Antoinette played by Norma Shearer has to say good-bye to her son. It is devastating; the vast array of emotions she portrays ,the depth of sorrow soo real it had me crying yet it wasn't a manipulative performance. It was genuine and heartfelt. She was a revelation to me as an actress, definetly worthy of respect as one of the great actress' of her time, and this film is worth seeing. *****

Movie Review: English history buff
Summary: 5 Stars

Wonderful movie - extremely excited to find it on DVD. The viewer needs to keep in mind that Hollywood standards of the time were simply different. The historical content is actually more accurate than I expected with only some detail of court life, the arrival of Marie Antoinette in France, the death of one of her sons before the revolution, etc. left out. The character portrayals are dramatized but that made for good cinema at that time and now, if kept in context.

Well worth having and watching repeatedly.

Movie Review: Classic Power Epic Picture
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are a big fam of Tyrone Power, you will love this movie. I have never seen him at his most beautiful than he is here. He's absolutely gorgeous (those lips, those eyes!). The only thing I disliked is that Tyrone is not in the movie as much as I'd like, but Norma Shearer is a jewel in herself. She was one of the premier actresses in her day, and you can see why in this picture. The costumes are lavish and the acting is good. This is one of my favorite movies. It's defintely a keeper!
