Movie Reviews of Marathon Man

Movie Review: IS WHAT SAFE?
Summary: 4 Stars

No question has ever been more puzzling in a film than "Is it safe?" After two viewings of this classic film, I am still not sure what Olivier was referring to? Safe to go to the bank? The diamonds? Just as Dustin Hoffman, I still find myself wondering is what safe?
This is undoubtedly a well made movie, acted with impeccable perfection by Hoffman, Olivier, Roy Scheider and William Devane. But some things still baffle me: the band-aid box with diamonds in it is given by Zell's brother to someone on the street, just prior to his untimely death in the road rage scene. Later, we see Scheider put the box in a box of candy and gives it to some clerk, who then gets murdered at the opera. The next time we see the band aid box, it's in the safety deposit box in New York. How did it get there? And why is William Devane so bent on killing Hoffman too? I must have missed something in both viewings; but, I admit I was mesmerized with the plot, and the chilling climax between Hoffman and Olivier is simply devastating.
Maybe someday I'll know what I just watched?

Movie Review: "What'd we talk about? It's safe. It's very safe."
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of those great thrillers that confuses as it intrigues. The first half of the film found me understanding very little except that Roy Scheider was involved with something concerning Nazis and the contents of a safety deposit box in a New York bank. Meanwhile Dustin Hoffman wrestles with demons from his past involving his father's suicide and the MacCarthy hearings.

Then the parts start to come together in some of the grittiest and most suspenseful scenes in seventies filmmaking, leading to the pretty obvious appraisal that somebody's not too safe.

This film has a great chase scene, some extremely good shootouts, and a torture scene that gives Reservoir Dogs a run for its money. The plot involves political history and ideologies, but only as a context for the suspense. And when the tables finally turned on Doctor Zell, I laughed as I cringed at the significance of the sentence Hoffman applies.

Movie Review: DIAMONDS ARE NOT FOREVER
Summary: 4 Stars

The professional reviewers never seemed to think too highly of this movie, and this amateur can't see why. Olivier is terrific as a former Nazi, who's forced to come out of hiding when his brother dies, leaving a veritable warchest of diamonds in a New York safe deposit box. That the diamonds were bought by this heinous dentist from tooth extractions of gold and silver from victims of Nazi concentration camps is of no matter whatever.Hoffman's brother is hot on Zell's (Olivier's) trail, when the dentist confronts and stabs him to death; the victim falling at Hoffman's feet. That does it; no more graduate work, no more training for road races until Hoffman's brother's death is avenged. While the path to Zell is fraught with pain, duplicity, and danger, Hoffman..well,see for yourself! You'll be highly entertained, even if the "experts" weren't.

Movie Review: A classic Hoffman Thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

Many movies like "Marathon Man" is a rare find nowdays in Hollywood. Dustin Hoffman is caught in web of trying to find out the real truth about his father suicide. Roy Scheider plays his older brother and the great Laurence Olivier saying to Hoffman with the unforgettable tag line, "Is It Safe.." ahhhhh!!!! That just give me the heebies just thinking about it. Basically Hoffman has to survive from a lot of very VERY bad men. The scence where Hoffman takes a bath and feels that hes not alone is sooo creepy that im suprised that Hitchcock was not involved in the input set up for the scene. Did He?

Movie Review: Dated, but still good
Summary: 4 Stars

If you're like me, the "older guy" in the neighborhood that has all the really good old movies, you'll want this in your collection. The scene where Szell, the Nazi War Criminal, is spotted walking down the street in New York's Diamond District is worth the price of the DVD all by itself. And, of course, no Hoffman collection would be complete without this one.
