Movie Reviews of Marathon Man

Movie Review: Yes, it's safe. So safe you wouldn't believe...
Summary: 5 Stars

Released in 1976 based on William Goldman's bestseller of the same name, 'Marathon Man' was a greatly anticipated film and it worked brillantly on screen. Goldman seemed to take two elements that spook people, Nazi's and dentists, so fused them into one character, Dr. Szell. Dr. Szell played to the hilt by Laurence Oliver (who was ill at the time and was considered uninsurable) has come out of hiding in Uraguay to collect his war booty and crosses paths with Dustin Hoffman, a graduate student who's drawn into the situation by his brother who works for a shadow element of the government. It's a complicated story, as you would hope for in a thriller. A world class cast of actors, skillfully directed by John Schlesinger, makes for a great film one that can be viewed repeatedly, I saw it when it opened at the Loews in Times Square in 76 and I still can watch it...but must confess, I still close my eyes when Dr. Szell is torturing the Marathon Man. Ouchh! Goldman was so right, a Nazi dentist nothing could be more fiendish!

Movie Review: MY TOOTH IS KILLING ME !
Summary: 5 Stars

What do you get when you combine top notch acting and a stellar cast? You get the 1977 action thriller "The Marathon Man" presented in it's 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio. The DVD transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound from Paramount Studios is excellent. The video transfer doesn't seem to contain any dust or debris and the image is very impressive, considering this film is from the 1970's.

The acting is superb and the chilling performance given by Laurence Olivier as the former Nazi "Szell" is outstanding. I've always hated the sound of the dentist's drill and after seeing it in the hands of "Szell", I hate it even more. Suspense, action and intrigue this movie has it all and after 30 years it's still highly entertaining. Only one question still remains, Is it Safe?

The DVD bonus features include: Theatrical Trailer, Cast & Crew interviews, Rehearsal Footage, Original "Making of Marathon Man" Featurette.

Movie Review: "Chilling"
Summary: 5 Stars

Dustin Hoffman plays a young history student and marathon runner who gets embroiled with the Nazi's who are trying to smuggle diamonds out of the United States. The film is known for the powerhouse performance of Sir Laurence Olivier who plays a Nazi dentist who tortures the Hoffman character by drilling holes in his teeth without anesthetic while muttering the words "is it safe?". Olivier would receive an Oscar nomination for his performance. Roy Scheider and William Devane also star. William Goldman, who wrote the original novel, also wrote the screenplay.
The "Marathon Man" DVD comes with cast and crew interviews, rehearsal footage, and an original featurette of the film. The movie is presented is superb widescreen format enhanced for 16:9 TV's and english subtitles are included.
Leonard Maltin says "Hoffman and arch-villain Olivier are superb!".
The movie was filmed in beautiful New York City.

Movie Review: A Day At The Dentist...
Summary: 5 Stars

When I see Dustin Hoffman in newer movies of today, I forget that this same guy was in MARATHON MAN, as well as MIDNIGHT COWBOY and STRAW DOGS! MARATHON MAN has that 70s thriller feel that is unique to that decade. While there is plenty of suspense, mystery, and action, there is also a more human side to such films. Hoffman's pain is not just physical. He is tortured in mind as well as body. His character's relationships w/ his brother (Roy Scheider) and his girlfriend (Marthe Keller) are emotional and real. This makes the loss all the more agonizing, and the finalé completely understandable. Laurence Olivier plays his nazi role w/ calm, cold precision, creating a memorable icon of evil. It is his face I still see whenever I need a tooth filled! MARATHON MAN is superb...

Movie Review: It's finally safe...
Summary: 5 Stars

Before he was that saintly nazi-hunter in THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL, Laurence Olivier was as bad and cold as nuclear winter in MARATHON MAN, from the wonderful mind of Willam Goldman. Along with THE FRENCH CONNECTION (also due soon on DVD) and THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123, this is one of the greatest "'70s New York" movies of all time, and it's finally here for you, as clear and sharp as one of Olivier's dental probes! Yes, Dustin Hoffman is great in this, but was anyone ever cooler than Roy Scheider as the brother who's "been away on business." Add Marthe Keller and that crackerjack Goldman dialogue and you've got a disc guaranteed to keep you far, far away from your next dental appointment. Is it safe? You better believe it!
