Movie Reviews of Marathon Man

Movie Review: Is it safe?
Summary: 5 Stars

Marathon Man is a truly thrilling film - something that most "thrillers" actually fail to achieve. In some ways it seems like a precurosr to the "Bourne" films with its far-flung locations and its one-man-against-the-system premise. If you want to sit back in your seat and be glued to the spot by a film the like of which they just don't seem to make any more then you've come to the right place. For me it's right up there with other classics of its era - Three Days Of The Condor, French Connection and Day Of The Jackal - packed with surprises and twists and turns, action and great perfromances from Hoffman, Olivier et al. And, if you've seen the film before, it wears well and is worth a return visit.

This DVD also has an excellent Making Of with interesting interviews with Bob Evans and Dustin Hoffman and William Goldman's honest take on the 'new' ending drafted on by the film-makers.

Good trivia: The little guy at the start of the film who takes the diamonds out of the bank vault was a survivor of the Hindenberg disaster and his real name, believe it or not, was Ben Dova! The actress who plays the woman who identifies Olivier's character and utters those fateful words, "Der weisse Engel!" over and over was, like her character, a survivoe of the camps.

Movie Review: They sure don't make them like this anymore
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll spare you a long talk about the movie, except that it's one of the best thrillers ever made. Enough said. Now for this new DVD. Finally we get this classic in widescreen, that alone should please many fans. (-The opening credit scene has a different letterboxing than the rest of the movie, for some reason.) The extras will make you drool !. A new documentary with most of the people involved with the movie, except Olivier, of course. Sadly, neither William Devane, Fritz Weaver, Richard Bright or the director take part. Still, it's great to hear the stories surrounding this excellent suspense movie, like why it was decided to give Olivier's character that last infamous meal !. -But it makes sense, considering what Hoffman's character went through. At one point when talking about Olivier, Hoffman is almost in tears. Touching. Strangely enough, I found the full-screen clips shown during the documentary to be sharper than the movie itself presented on this DVD. Stll, you must get this release, even if the price is a little high. There's also a very good 70s making-of featurette with interviews. Take ANY thriller made today, compare it to "Marathon Man", and "Marathon Man" will win on ALL levels. It's as simple as that.

Movie Review: Pass The Novocaine, Doc!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have always found this to be a very entertaining, involving, taut suspense movie with some very dramatic scenes. I've seen in four times over the years and liked it better each time, particularly since it's been available on DVD which enhanced the sound from mono to stereo, and the 1.85:1 widescreen enhancing the cinematography.

The film is fascinating with no dry spots despite its two-hour length. There is a nice variety of action scenes and very interesting characters. Marthe Keller never looked better. Too bad she didn't make more movies in the U.S. Dustin Hoffman, as he did so well in the '70s, keeps your attention and Laurence Olivier is absolutely riveting. This is a terrific thriller, start to finish.

On the other side of the coin, to be balanced about the film, I didn't find the infamous dentist scene to be as terrifying as it was made up to be and the references to the McCarthy hearings and having the U.S government police agencies corrupt are getting to be tiresome of the Left in the movie business.

Overall, still a fascinating film after 30-plus years. I'm sorry we recently lost Roy Scheider, who appears in this film. He was such an underrated actor.

Movie Review: A THRILLER THAT ACTUALLY THRILLS
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an old favorite. I watched it again the other night. It's
been over twenty years since I saw it last, and it's still as
good today as it was back then. The first half of the movie
plays heavily on plot and character development, which serves well
during the later action scenes. This development is not boring,
it is intermingled with sequences of international intrigue,
murder, and betrayal. Hoffman plays a history student who also
happens to be a wanna-be marathon runner obsessed with the death
of his father. Without giving too much away, Laurence Olivier
gives an excellent and chilling performance as a Nazi with a
knack for dental instruments. This is one of those "I don't
know who I can trust" movies. Unlike most movies with this
premise, it creates a believable scenario, instead of relying on
the same old tired "I can't remember" trick that so many lesser
movies cheat their audience with. Once this movie kicks into
overdrive, it moves along at a fever pitch with twists and turns
around every corner. The suspense will have you on the edge of
your seat.
Thanks and enjoy,
Tom

Movie Review: You will never look at a dentist the same way ever again
Summary: 5 Stars

In order for me to really like a movie I need to feel some sort of empathy with a character...a, yes...I can understand that, sense of what is going on...frankly I have never had thugs break my arms, beat me senseless, put me on a rack or applied electrodes to various parts of my body...however, I have been to the Dentist.

When Dustin Hofmann has his front tooth drilled through in an effort to extract information, it literally made my spine shiver...now that is pain I understand...then when his torturer leers over him and says..."we need to find a fresh nerve", I knew I would be telling him everything I knew...killed Kennedy? sure I was there...Hoffa? I'm your man...Gold? no problem, I know where the pirates hid it...just put the drill away...

For me this movie has the most horrific torture seen ever filmed (perhaps because I have been in the chair).

If memorability is a criteria for a great movie then this is great because I bet you will remember this movie every time you go to the dentist...for the rest of your life.
