Movie Reviews of Maniac Cop

Movie Review: Kill Street Blues...
Summary: 4 Stars

MANIAC COP is a wonderful revenge film. Robert Z'Dar is the title character, a shadowy, towering killer who was once an NYPD hero. Is he alive? Dead? Something in between? Tom Atkins (The Fog, Night Of The Creeps) is the officer attempting to find and stop the maniacal man in blue. Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 1 and 2, Bubba Ho Tep) is a likely suspect. Legendary Richard Roundtree (Shaft) is the police commisioner and William Smith (Invasion Of The Beegirls, Memorial Valley Massacre) is a captain! Larry Cohen's writing shines through this gloomy tale, w/ familar faces from his past work. Not very scary, but fun to watch...

Movie Review: Pretty good
Summary: 4 Stars

I didn't expect too much from this movie, but it was entertaining and well plotted. Production values are decent considering the slim budget it probably had. You also get a chance to see a very young Bruce Campbell in what must have been one of his first roles. Don't expect a whole lot from the cinematography though. It was well shot, but it is fairly old (late '70's or early '80's?) and has the slight fuzziness that was typical of that era. Worth the price.

Movie Review: "Great 80's horror!"
Summary: 4 Stars

Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell and Robert Z'Dar star in this 1988 horror film.
A detective and a framed cop try to stop a crazed killer who's an ex-cop.
I like this film and Tom and Bruce are great as usual. This dvd has good
picture and sound plus neat extras. I recommend this great 80's horror
film.

Movie Review: To protect and slaughter
Summary: 3 Stars

Maniac Cop is what you could consider an action/horror movie of sorts. It's a semi-interesting who-dunnit with a great cast and a tinge of the supernatural.

The story begins with a crazed killer in police uniform who claims the lives of innocent, and as the figure of authority he appears to be, snagging victims doesn't prove to be much of a challenge for him. When word of these grisly happenings gets out, the city is overcome with paranoia and begin killing any police officer that confronts them in fear that that officer may be the "maniac cop". This aspect of the storyline is a lot of fun while it lasts. Unfortunately it soon fizzles out into endless scenes of tedious detective work, dull and needless dialogue often between very minor characters, things of that nature. They had something good going here with the gore and should have stuck with it. Meanwhile two detectives attempt to discover the identity of the maniac cop and put a stop to his antics.

I won't go into an exorbitant amount of detail in regards to the acting and special effects. If you've ever seen a B-movie, and by viewing this product you probably have, you know the deal. However I will point out that anything starring Tom Atkins and/or Bruce Campbell is always a notch more enjoyable than usual, and wouldn't you know it, Maniac Cop stars them both.

Overall a decent movie that while occassionally dull has some great death and action sequences, although I did feel like they were pushing their luck here setting it up for a sequel. Must see stuff for Tom Atkins and Bruce Campbell fans, otherwise you aren't missing much.

Movie Review: Pure trash that's enjoyable to a point
Summary: 3 Stars

Maniac Cop has never had too warm a place in my heart as it has in many other's, but this flick from writer/producer Larry Cohen and director William Lustig (Maniac) serves as being enjoyable trash in it's own merits. Genre stalwart Tom Atkins stars as a veteran detective who thinks that a rash of murders are being perpetrated by a cop thought long dead, while the department thinks they've caught their man with a young patrolman (Bruce "Evil Dead" Campbell) that fits the profile. A majority of Maniac Cop is a predictable mess that doesn't strive to be anything more than what it is, and in that respect alone, you can't help but admire the cheesiness of it all. The sequels that followed failed to deliver the same kind of enjoyable trash moviemaking that the original did, and having Bruce Campbell here just makes this flick more enjoyable than it should be. Also featuring Richard "Shaft" Roundtree and Evil Dead and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi in a quick cameo.
