Movie Review: To protect and slaughter
Summary: 3 Stars
Maniac Cop is what you could consider an action/horror movie of sorts. It's a semi-interesting who-dunnit with a great cast and a tinge of the supernatural.
The story begins with a crazed killer in police uniform who claims the lives of innocent, and as the figure of authority he appears to be, snagging victims doesn't prove to be much of a challenge for him. When word of these grisly happenings gets out, the city is overcome with paranoia and begin killing any police officer that confronts them in fear that that officer may be the "maniac cop". This aspect of the storyline is a lot of fun while it lasts. Unfortunately it soon fizzles out into endless scenes of tedious detective work, dull and needless dialogue often between very minor characters, things of that nature. They had something good going here with the gore and should have stuck with it. Meanwhile two detectives attempt to discover the identity of the maniac cop and put a stop to his antics.
I won't go into an exorbitant amount of detail in regards to the acting and special effects. If you've ever seen a B-movie, and by viewing this product you probably have, you know the deal. However I will point out that anything starring Tom Atkins and/or Bruce Campbell is always a notch more enjoyable than usual, and wouldn't you know it, Maniac Cop stars them both.
Overall a decent movie that while occassionally dull has some great death and action sequences, although I did feel like they were pushing their luck here setting it up for a sequel. Must see stuff for Tom Atkins and Bruce Campbell fans, otherwise you aren't missing much.

Innocent people are brutally killed on the streets of New York by a uniformed police officer. A young cop, Jack Forrest (played by Bruce Campbell), finds himself marked as the chief suspect after his wife is murdered. As Lieutenant Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) investigates these mysterious killings, the death toll rises and he suspects a mysterious police cover-up. This "maniac" cop must be stopped, but it might not be so easy! He isn't an ordinary man. He's inhuman. driven by supernatural forces. and ready to take on the entire police force, hell-bent on revenge!
