Movie Reviews of Manhattan Murder MysteryMovie Review: One of my favorite films! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the only Woody Allen film I have ever seen, and I LOVE IT! It is so hilarious and entertaining throughout. Diane Keaton is truly the star here and in top comedic form! I think her character reminds us all about ourselves in a way. Keaton plays bored housewife Carol Lipton who becomes convinced that her next door neighbor is a murderer. So she sets off on a Nancy Drew-like mystery to find clues and discover the truth. Her antics are soon causing tension in her marriage while she grows closer to a recently divorced friend played by Alan Alda which is all handled in a subtle way. Angelica Huston has a great supporting role as a client and author of Woody Allen's character who also gets involved in the mystery. If you have overlooked this comedic gem, you are missing out! It's rare you will find comedy this superb and with such outstanding performances. 5 stars!
Movie Review: Wonderful mix of Murder, Mistery and Comedy Summary: 5 Stars
Diane Keaton and Woody Allen make quick friends with an older couple. After the woman dies of a heart attack, Diane Keaton starts investigating on her own thinking that it was not a heart attack afterall. Woody on the other end does not believe in this murder idea and thinks his wife is getting too excited for no reason. The movie mixes great suspense and comedy. The skepticism of woody allen and the wild (but maybe not so wild) imagination of diane keaton make for highly entertaining dialogues. The new york atmosphere of the movie is quite lovely too. The story moves fast and as Diane Keaton discovers more and more clues you find yourself seating on the edge of your seat wondering what next is going to happen. This movie is wonderfull all the way to the end that parodies the ending of an old movie classic.
Movie Review: Allen's Best Movie Ever!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the movie that made me like Woody Allen. I always thought he was strange when I was a kid but this changed my mind. I went backwards I guess and just recently bought the Woody Allen box set. I am seeing those movies for the first time but I still like MMM the best. Allan Alda does a fantastic job with his part and so does Woody. It's about a group of friends who investigate the disappearance of W. Allen & Keaton's neighbor whom they just met. Keaton is obsessed with solving the case and W. Allen is constantly trying to talk her out of it by complaining about everything so they get into some pretty funny situations. This has all the qualities and more that made Annie Hall such a historical movie. You won't be disappointed.
Movie Review: Clever and Quite Funny Summary: 5 Stars
After paying tribute to the masters (Bergman), Woody Allen went back to more familiar territory - with a delightful twist.
Think of it as Annie Hall Gets To Play Nancy Drew. Whatever, Manhattan Murder Mystery is a short, fast, and very funny, movie. It has an all-star cast (Alan Alda, Angelica Houston)and reunites Woody with Diane Keaton. The dialogue is swift, laugh-out-loud funny and the plot is entertaining. More important, adults act and talk like adults. Without being stuffy, this film introduces urbane, witty, folks who talk and act like normal people. Woody Allen will always be the master of dialogue and here, he uses it to the best possible advantage.
A fun movie that everybody will enjoy.
Movie Review: Diane Keaton & Woody Reunite! Summary: 5 Stars
With public popularity swaying away from Woody Allen, only Diane Keaton could put the wheels back on Woody's reputation. Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) is a return to the entertaining, laugh-out-loud, slapstic comedic romps we all loved in Woody Allen's Funny Films like 'Take the Money & Run', 'Bananas', 'Play It Again, Sam', 'Sleeper', 'Love & Death' and 'Annie Hall'. The coup de grace in making this film most memorable was the brilliant casting-against-type of Jerry Adler (Mr. Wicker on 'Mad About You') who would later dazzle us as Herman 'Hesh' Rabkin in 'The Sopranos'. Truly one of his greatest triumphs in Funny rather than Intellectual comedy!
