Movie Reviews of MaliceMovie Review: Twisting and Entertaining Summary: 4 Stars
Proper enjoyment of this diverting little feature requires not knowing the plot twists, so I'll try to not spoil that enjoyment in praising this film.
I join Roger Ebert in not being able to think of another film that throws in a serial killer as just atmosphere - I watched this movie when it first came out a decade ago, then again on DVD yesterday, and I had completely forgotten the part about the serial killer.
Aside from the fact that George C. Scott and Anne Bancroft have left us, it would be difficult to assemble a cast like this wouldn't it? Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman, Bill Pullman, Anne Bancroft, Gwyneth Paltrow, George C. Scott, Bebe Newirth, Peter Gallagher all contribute to this film.
I love to watch films of any genre and any country and the sensation I like to have at the end of the viewing experience is "satisfied" - in the same way that I'd like my palate and belly "satisfied" by a good meal. This screenplay twists and turns, but rather than in a Charlie Kaufman "hey-look-at-how-many-unexpected-twists-and-turns-I-can-put-in" kind of way this story moves in a way that wraps up loose ends in a "satisfied" kind of way.
Especially used, this DVD can be had for a song also. It's a satisfactory way to pass a couple of hours.
Movie Review: Welcome to the game... Summary: 4 Stars
So everyone here has already ruined the surprise by spilling the fact that the serial killer murder thing is just a sub-plot and not important (well, it's important) but I just want to say that that aside, this film was exseptional because it was surprisingly full of twists I never saw coming. With Alec Baldwin moving in with married couple played by Nicole Kidman and Bill Pullman, Alec brings this eerie confidence to his charactor, someone you can never trust, but for some reason you want to. Nicole plays her charactor so well that you believe everthing she says and thats important to the story because you believe her even when you shouldn't...she's perfect here. Bill Pullman lacks a bit, but he's not your best actor anyway. Anne Bancroft is great as Nicole Kidmans alcoholic mother. The film starts off being a 'who is this man living upstairs' type film to a 'could he be raping and murdering my students' type movie to a 'why is everyone screwing me over' type movie and whats great is that it keeps you guessing by addressing different situations that lead your attention away from the big surprise in the end. I thought it was very well done and worth the time it took to watch it.
Movie Review: Twisted thriller is full of surprises Summary: 4 Stars
The first time I saw this eight years ago, it blew me away, Now, a half dozen viewings later, I see all the plot holes. Yet I still love it because of its cast, its dark humor and its elements of film noir. This movie really is marvelously malicious. To paraphrase the tag line on the theatrical poster, see it before someone tells you the ending. That's good advice because, like the classic 1957 thriller, Witness for the Prosecution, the true impact works only on the first viewing. So, I won't say much about the plot. Suffice it to say that no one is what they seem. [Note; There is a subplot about a serial killer that seems detached from the main story; however, it is critical to explaioing a key element in the movie.] Nicole Kidman, Alec Balwin and Bill Pullman are all first-rate. Recently, Kidman has only confirmed what I suspected when this came out in 1993. She is a rare combination of a great star AND a great actress. Her range continues to amaze me. Here, she is...well, I won't give it away.
Movie Review: I am God Summary: 4 Stars
A great movie line that should go down in the history books. Alec Baldwin and Nicole Kidman shined in this ninies thriller and it still holds up pretty well. The plot does have a lot coindicences, but the performances are what make this film. The last twist with the kid may have been too much. Being a next door neighbor, I believe Kidman's character would have known about the handicap. Recommended.
Movie Review: The Serial Killer Sub-plot Summary: 4 Stars
The serial killer is inserted, not thrown in, as a means to "say" more about Bill Pullman's character's capabilities. These hint at aspects of this fellow others will ingore as the film moves on- I'll not comment on the consequences of their oversights.
