Movie Review: "Speak of the Devil..."
Summary: 5 Stars

Tracy and Andy Safian (Nicole Kidman, Bill Pullman) are a young couple just starting out in life. He's an associate dean at the college and she's a teacher, and their big, old house needs repairs. To make ends meet, they rent out the upstairs room to an old high school classmate of Andy's, Dr. Jed Hill (Alec Baldwin). Tracy thinks he's impossibly arrogant but Andy likes him. One day, Tracy is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening pains, and Jed is the surgeon on call. His actions will destroy all of their lives.

This is one creepy thriller with great acting and a script that will keep you guessing - and on the edge of your seat. Baldwin is perfectly cast as the megalomaniac doctor. He's both attractive and repulsive and owns the screen. Kidman shows quite an acting range, going from ideal wife to something very shocking indeed. Pullman is Everyman, struggling to get by, doing his best, and being easily fooled. There is a scary subplot about a rapist on campus that is unnecessary, except to establish the close friendship between Andy and a hard-boiled police detective, well-played by Bebe Neuwirth. Anne Bancroft shines in a small part as Tracy's alcoholic mother. The story is fast-paced, intense, and full of surprises. If you like psychological thrillers, you'll enjoy "Malice."

Movie Review: The Kitchen Sink...
Summary: 5 Stars

MALICE has a little something for everyone. It's a serial-killer story, a medical thriller, a legal drama, a neo-noir, and a suspenseful mystery. There's enough here for ten movies! Nicole Kidman (DEAD CALM, PRACTICAL MAGIC, BIRTHDAY GIRL, THE OTHERS, INVASION), Alec Baldwin (THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER), and Bill Pullman (INDEPENDENCE DAY, LOST HIGHWAY) play the central trio in this shifting tale of fraud, betrayal, and murder. If you love movies that keep you guessing, and deliver some delightful twists along the way, then MALICE should fill your prescription! Watch for George C. Scott (EXORCIST III, THE CHANGELING) as a doctor, Anne Bancroft in a small but crucial role, Gwyneth Paltrow (SE7EN) as a student, and Tobin "Jigsaw" Bell (SAW 1-6) as a creepy janitor! Enjoy...

Movie Review: "Key Point Missed on Serial Killer Subplot" Misses Key Point
Summary: 5 Stars

The writer of the review I refer to is correct to say that the serial killer/rapist sub-plot is not unnecessary. But I don't think it was included just to lead Andy to realize he is sterile, and therefore could not have impregnated his wife. Certainly the script writers could have found a more elegant way to do this. (I'll let you imagine other possibilities:)

Rather, the main purpose of the sub-plot seems to be to distract the audience from the scandal unfolding in front of them. It is, at least in part, the emphasis placed on the serial killer/rapist mystery that makes the conspiracy such a surprise when it is finally revealed. In this sense the conspirators fool not only the main character but the audience as well!

Movie Review: Unexpected twists
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this again to see if I could pick up on 'where' in the movie I should've been clued in that things weren't as they seemed, and innocent characters were certainly anything but. I also realized why the serial killer had to be part of the beginning of the movie (something I didn't pick up on the first time). The murders led to a test that was 'necessary' in order to reveal one of the huge clues that becomes the turning point of the movie, and helps a couple of the characters 'wise up'. Definitely worth watching, mystery fans...

Movie Review: One of the greatest scenes in cinematic history
Summary: 5 Stars

First time I saw this movie, I was with a male roommate; we were so scared, we vowed to never marry. After I made the mistake of marrying such a one, I used the movie to break the news to my mother and brother. When the movie ended I told them that Nicole Kidman was my wife. But enough of that. Alec Baldwin's rant about his having a god complex is quite possibly one of the best scenes in cinematic history. Great contrast between someone with a god complex and the One who had The God Complex . org
