Movie Reviews of Maid in ManhattanMovie Review: Well, It's worth renting it. Summary: 4 Stars
...I personally despize jlo s music, but I think that this moive was pretty good. This was decent movie. It was very similar to the theme of the moive "Ever After" (with Drew Barrymore) witch was set in midevil times, and is also much like a cinderella story. You see, in "Ever After", a girl's father dies, and is servent to her dreadful step mother and step sisters. When she must save her fellow sevent from being sold to the palace, she dresses up like a lady and the price sees her. Thinking that she too is noble, he falls in love with her. She continues dressing up so, convincing herself that she will tell him eventually, and when she tell him he is extremly destressed. He's mad that she desived him, and also mad that a servent could win his heart. However, he soon realizes that it doesn't matter if she is noble or not, because he loves her. After this he forgives her and they live happily "ever after". I like this story much better, becuase it is much more compeling and thought provoking than Maid in Manhattan, yet they are much the same. Bottom line? Rent Maid in Manhattan, it's worth it, and the kid who plays her son in the movie is great...
Movie Review: "Maid in Manhattan" Summary: 4 Stars
Both Ebert and Roeper give "Two Thumbs Up!" to Maid in Manhattan starring Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes. Pat Collins says "The best romantic comedy since Pretty Women." I say,"It'll make you laugh and cry at the same time."
This movie is extaordinary and brilliant. You'll have to watch the movie for yourself to see what I mean. This movie is very different from other movies. Your going to laugh and cry your heart out.
Some good things about the movie was that Marisa Ventura(Jennifer L.)is a single mother who supports her 10 year-old son by working as a maid in Manhattan. One evening Marisa was trying on her hotel guest's clothes persuaded by her friend who is also a maid, when she met Christopher Marshall(Ralph f.)they spent the day together and fell in love.
Unfortunately, some of the bad things were that he mistaked her as a wealthy socialite. When her true identity is revealed, the issues of class threated to seperate them. Pretty soon, Marisa Ventura has to choose between love or her job. This movie has a unsuspecting ending and I never get tired of watching it.
Movie Review: A Modern Fairy Tale Summary: 4 Stars
I've seen Maid in Manhattan criticized as a "rip-off" of Pretty Woman. That misses the point: both are simply a modern retelling of Cinderella. Maid in Manhattan sticks much closer to the original stories than Pretty Woman. And, while the "Prince" in this version is a politician, the political commentary is kept to a merciful minimum--in contrast to 1998's Ever After - A Cinderella Story (also a decent film, but a heavy-handed one).
Certainly, the story is formulaic and the characters are stereotypes (or, if you like, archetypes); nor are Lopez and Fiennes able to rise above the material. But the acting and production are competent and the movie succeeds as a big-budget, up-to-date fairy tale. The soundtrack is also much better than the usual fare. Highly recommended as a "date movie".
Note to Soul music geeks: watch the credits and look for the full name of "Rufus" the dog.
Movie Review: A Sweet Modern-Day Cinderella Story Summary: 4 Stars
about an overworked, underappreciated single mom who happened to worked at a very prestigious hotel in NYC. She wanted to aspire to hotel managment but her insecurity held her back until a co-worker filled in the application for her. She did this because she want to see her succeed in the hospitality business. Then, the unthinkable happend. A politician from a very patrician family bumped into a well-dressed woman who went out for a walk in the park along with her son, who unwittingly masterminds the romantic plan.
Things unravel when the one of the guests identified the upper class woman at the ball as the maid, Marisa was fired and she had to start all over again working at another prestigious hotel. Her son is so unrelenting in rekindling the romance between Marisa and the senator that he skipped school to do so.
Go ahead and buy this movie. You'll love it!
Movie Review: Light diversion; Entertaining Summary: 4 Stars
I watched this on TV, commercials and all, and I still enjoyed it. I was not in a mood to take things seriously, and this gentle, harmless diversion from director Wayne Wang was not an offense to my intelligence. Lopez & Fiennes (with an American "accent") were good together, and good supporting roles by Amy Sedaris, Natasha Richardson, Bob Hoskins and, especially, Stanley Tucci, were a riot. In sweet, mindless films like this, the supporting characters are always the best. I could've been doing other things, I guess, but at 11:30 at nite, this was not a waste of my time. I liked it. Lighten up... PS~ The little kid in this film gave a great performance.
