Movie Reviews of Madonna - Truth or DareMovie Review: What's up with the sound? Summary: 4 Stars
Being a huge Madonna fan, once I finally got my DVD player and figured out how to play Region 1 DVDs (I live in Europe), Truth or Dare was my first Region 1 purchase. I hadn't seen the film for a few years - my VHS copy had seen better days, especially the songs, so it was with great anticipation that I waited for the DVD to arrive. And ... well, it's ok. The film itself is still as good as I remember it being, but I have to say I'm a more than a little disappointed with the transfer. Another reviewer mentioned the grainy b&w footage, but it was shot that way. My problem is that, in certain sections, the dialogue doesn't match the mouths. It's a little strange, and more than a little annoying. Why is this?! Other than that, a fantastic film. Watching her entourage suck up to her is cringeworthy. Watching the concert footage from the Blond Ambition tour is just amazing. And another bonus for someone living in Europe is that the film plays at the proper speed. The European version, In Bed With Madonna, ran a little faster, meaning that when she spoke her voice took on a helium-like effect, and the songs zipped by super fast. This is great. So, that's all. The film is worth 5 stars, but because of the bad transfer and lack of extras (2 crummy trailers - one with bad sound), I'll only give it 4.
Movie Review: Madonna ... she is just an ordinary person....(???) Summary: 4 Stars
This film, which shows Madonna¡¯s frank story about her life and splendid concert scenes, became an issue when it was released, because of some suggestive scenes. However, when I have seen this film, it is not a problem that it is just her candid attitude for music and her life. Sometimes, I thought that her frankness is going too much, but that is only her personality. This film can be approved as a documentary film in spite of a little lasciviousness. First of all, this film was made, concert scenes filmed with a color, and out of stage, interview scenes filmed with a black and white. I was very impressed by her concerts; it was pretty amazing and excellent. She is not a singer who just shows sexy body, has a passionate stage manner, splendid dancing and outstanding singing ability. She deserves to be famous as a singer. Generally, a pop singer who pays attention to show sexy body or dance, usually do not have a good singing ability. But, Madonna always has an impassioned live concert. In addition, she has a firm faith about her own music. As I see these scenes, I have realized that I had a prejudice about her. She talks frankly and straightly that is her one of charm. Anyway, this film made room to think about her further. It is one of good documentary about pop star.
Movie Review: She Dares You... Summary: 4 Stars
Madonna has been a part of our public consciousness for almost three decades. Love or hate her, no one would argue that she is one of the biggest pop stars and icons of our time. There is just something so captivating about her. It's more than her talent (and unlike some of her detractors, I am a huge fan and I do believe that she is talented). It's more about her star quality, which consists of a mixture of ambition, charisma, nerve, and elusiveness. "Truth or Dare" is a daring documentary that truly captures the force of Madonna's compelling personality. We get to see many different facets of her persona: the boss, the narcissist, the passionate artist, the maternal figure. Of course, there are moments in the film that feel sort of staged and premeditated and intended to effect the viewer. But that just demonstrates the power of Madonna's postmodern vision. It constantly raises the question "Is this life, this is art, or both?" One constant theme of Madonna's work is to turn her life into a kind of performance art. She manages to do that brilliantly with "Truth or Dare". It's hilarious, it's entertaining, and (despite how "real" it is or not) it's very insightful.
Movie Review: A Document for Madonna's Times Summary: 4 Stars
16 years after this documentary was released, and Madonna is still with us. Has anything changed? She's had kids, maintained musical mastery of her work and kept on chugging.
Truth or Dare is a very well made 'fly-on-the-wall'document that has not dated in my opinion. Then, as now, Madonna was ahead of the curve in doing this. Her chameleon like makeovers make her a more riveting subject. And as an icon for her time, she makes for great tv. The slice of life approach integrates well and viewing it 16 years later - it's as fresh as it ever was. Better than the Osbournes.
One thing is I always wondered what happened to the director of the film: Alek Keshishian. They should consider doing a follow up.
PS - Blond Ambition was my favourite Madonna tour on video, and I hope they release it again on DVD. This release features a few performances.
Movie Review: Inside look at Madonna's 1990 Blond Ambition Tour Summary: 4 Stars
If you are not a Madonna fan, this dvd will be worth just for the live performances or part of(Express Yourself, Oh Father, Like a Virgen, Promise to try, Holiday, Live to tell, Causing a commotion and Keep it together).
If you are a fan you can see Madonna close and somehow personal during her Blond Ambition tour back in 1990. At that time she was the most famous wild and single girl in the music world (now she is a very more respected artist), you can see how she prepares for each concert, all the commotion involved, how the crew becomes her family and how fame can be a prision sometimes. Film mostly in black and white is a representation of how a tour is and all the elements involved in it.
