Movie Reviews of MaborosiMovie Review: Maborosi Summary: 5 Stars
A potent examination of one woman's attempt to cope with loss and grief, Koreeda's tranquil, almost unnervingly serene drama brings to mind the finest work of Ozu, especially with its humanism, compassion, and focus on the psychology of a female protagonist. Still and silent, yet visually ravishing, "Maborosi" is a kind of mourning song for vanished loved ones and the persistent enigma of others' inner emotional lives. Seeing it is a sort of healing experience.
Movie Review: Excellent movie! Poor transfer. Summary: 5 Stars
I'm very enthusiastic about this movie (see my earlier review), however it should be noted that the quality of the print is extremely poor. The movie was transferred to tape and subtitled for release in the U.S. and unfortunately the DVD was taken from this low quality tape transfer rather than being printed from the film. If a better print were released in the U.S. I'd rush to buy it. How about it Criterion Collection?
Movie Review: Wonderful movie with a terrible DVD release. Summary: 5 Stars
The film is one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ever made but whoever did the DVD compression was an idiot. It looks like a bad YouTube video stream with JPEG blocks dancing in the all of the many dark scenes. The DVD is letterboxed TV format on a single layer. It has the look of a cheap rush job. Of course the true culprits are the producers of the DVD New Yorker Video.
Movie Review: Simply the best film i have ever seen Summary: 5 Stars
i watched this film for the first time in a japanese film class and was totally unprepared. The combination of the director and dp's masterful use of all natural lighting and only two moving shots creates a beautiful and haunting story. The tone and visual asthetic of this film are a much the point as the characters if not more. In a word it is simply breath taking.
Movie Review: Quiet, Melancholy, Introspective Summary: 5 Stars
With a bare minimum of action, dialogue, or even plot Koreeda reveals the delicacy and complexity of his characer's natures. It is particularly moving to watch tenderness and intimacy develop even in an apparently arranged marriage and through the unresolved grief of an incomprehensible suicide. But the grief is the focus of the film.
