Movie Reviews of M*A*S*H - Martinis and Medicine Complete Collection

Movie Review: One of the Best Shows on Television!
Summary: 5 Stars

How would you define MASH. Do you label it as a comedy or do you label it as a drama? The best answer would be, MASH would have to defined as both! The original movie was pure comedy. There no emphasis placed on the drama of the sessions in the operating room. When MASH was recasted for television, producers had to adjust the format,to make it appealing to the viewing audience. The comedic genius of Alan Alda brought the light comedy to the series. Dr. Walter Dishel, the medical advisor for the series, brought the drama of the operating room to the viewing audience. The surgeons at the 4077th MASH, were trauma surgeons, operating close to the front lines during the Korean War. They knew time was critical if they were going to save a man's life. Some of the cases seen the operating room, were loosely based on actual cases from the Korean War and possibly Vietnam.
When MASH was recasted for television, it was beautifully done. Alan Alda was perfect as Hawkeye Pierce. Wayne Rogers was excellent as Trapper John. Loretta Swit was outstanding as "Hot Lips" Houlihan! The late McClean Stevenson was good as Colonel Henry Blake and the late Larry Linville was perfect for the character of Major Frank Burns. The only carry-over from movie was Gary Burghoff as Radar O'Reilly. As the series progressed, other characters were introduced. During the second season, William Christopher was introduced as Father Mulcahy and Jamie Farr was introduced as cross-dressing Corporal Max Klinger.
During the first three seasons, MASH was a light comedy with a little drama from the sessions in the operating room. The comedy came from several sources. The first, was the constant battles between Hawkeye Pierce & Trapper John with Major Burns. The second, was the affair between Major Burns & Hot Lips Houlihan. The other source was Klinger's efforts to get out of the Army on a Section 8 medical discharge. At the end of season three, changes were made as new characters were introduced. Veteran character actor Harry Morgan joined the cast as Colonel Sherman Potter. He provided the father figure to the series. Daytime actor Mike Farrell joined the cast as Captain B.J. Hunnicutt, a dedicated husband and father who was away from his family while serving during the Korean War. During the fourth season, the viewing audience started to see changes in the character of Hot Lips Houlihan. During the first three seasons, Major Margaret Houlihan was a cold, no non-sense Army chief nurse who cared about her nurses. The changes made in her character, were gradual over the course of the series. During the fourth season, more emphasis was placed on the cases in the operating room. During the sixth season, David Ogden Stiers joined the cast as Major Charles Emerson Winchester, a Boston thorasic surgeon with an ego. During the early part of season 8, everyone seen the departure of Gary Burghoff as Radar O'Reilly was sent home on a hardship discharge after the passing of his Uncle Ed. Klinger would take over the duties of company clerk.
During its run, MASH was a combination of light comedy of the practical jokes that were pulled on unsuspecting members of the unit and the drama taking place in the operating room. One of the best episodes of the series, was the last. Good-bye,Farewell & Amen was perfect. One of the storylines was the pressure finally getting to Hawkeye Pierce, requiring the assistance of Dr. Sidney Freeman, the psychiatrist. The major storyline was the cease fire, bringing the Korean War to an end and disbanding of the 4077th MASH for the trip home and the reunions with their families. CBS should be commended in allowing the producers of MASH to bring the series to a conclusion. MASH is one of the best series on television and continues to do well in syndication. The character of Major Margaret Houlihan provided inspiration to thoses who pursued nursing careers. The real MASH units during the Korean War, provided the concept of the trauma centers we see in the major cities of the United States.
If you are fan of MASH like I am, M*A*S*H - Martinis & Medicine Complete Collection, is a must for anyone's DVD library. It will allow you to enjoy & relive some of the best episodes of the series. MASH is most definitely, Classic Television!

Summary of M*A*S*H - Martinis and Medicine Complete Collection

One of television's longest-running and most beloved shows of all time is now available in one extraordinary DVD collection. Loaded with top-rank extras that every M*A*S*H fan will love, The Ultimate Collection contains all 11 heartwarming and hilarious seasons, including the record-breaking series finale (still the most-watched episode in TV history), plus the original 1970 film, two all-new bonus discs and a retrospective book created exclusively for this release. Relive all your favorite M*A*S*H memories with the doctors and nurses of the 4077th that kept us in stitches-and created a true television classic.
This M*A*S*H-tastic 36-disc collection is one for the television time capsule. It contains all 11 seasons of this multi-Emmy Award-winning series, PLUS Robert Altman's 1970 iconoclastic anti-war classic, PLUS two discs of special features, including two reunion specials and a series retrospective episode of A&E's Biography. As with the individual season sets, there are no new episode commentaries, a major disappointment. But M*A*S*H-ophiles will enjoy this set's other bonus features, including emotional behind-the-scenes footage of the filming of the last half-hour episode, "As Time Goes By," the inevitable bloopers, interviews with cast members as well as fans about their favorite episodes, a segment about the series' "Jocularity," a parade of PSAs (cut down on salt to avoid heart disease), and the text of an unproduced script penned by Alda for an episode titled, "Hawkeye on the Double." All of this material (except for a commemorative booklet) is available elsewhere in different configurations, but this space-saving (albeit ungainly packaged) box set collects them all under one tent.

Adapted for television by legendary comedy writer Larry Gelbart, the series has long since supplanted Altman's film in the public's consciousness. Life and death at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War doesn't seem like ripe fodder for a comedy series, but M*A*S*H masterfully balanced laughter and tears (less so in its later, more preachy seasons). It often does play better without a laugh track (a viewing option for all episodes). During its run, M*A*S*H survived several delicate operations, including the departure of Gelbart after season 4 and the loss of core ensemble members McLean Stevenson as Col. Henry Blake and Wayne Rogers as Trapper John (after season 3), Larry Linville as Frank Burns (after season 5) and Gary Burghoff (a veteran of the original film) as Radar (after season 8). The show thrived with the introduction of some new blood, Henry Morgan as "regular Army" Col. Potter and Mike Farrell as compassionate BJ (season 4) and David Ogden Stiers as elitist Charles Emerson Winchester III (season 6).

M*A*S*H was honored with the prestigious Peabody Award "for the depth of its humor and the manner in which comedy is used to lift the spirit and, as well, to offer a profound statement on the nature of war." This was a sitcom that did not always leave you laughing, as witness the classic season 3 episode "Abyssinia, Henry." And throughout its run, M*A*S*H broke the sitcom mold with several episodes, including "The Interview" (season 4), in which Clete Roberts interviews the staff of the 4077th, "Point of View" (season 7), subjectively seen through the eyes of a wounded soldier and "Life Time" (season 8), which unfolds in real time. M*A*S*H boasted one of television's greatest ensembles, fully embodied characters who each became icons, most notably Alan Alda, who served with distinction as Hawkeye, the series' soul and conscience. But a special salute to Loretta Switt, whose Margaret Houlihan went from "Hot Lips" to nobody's pushover. From the "Pilot" to the feature-length finale, "Goodbye, Farewell & Amen," still the most-watched episode in history, this essential (but not so much if you bought the individual season sets) collection honors one of television's greatest half-hours. --Donald Liebenson
