Movie Reviews of LutherMovie Review: Excellent treatment of the great Reformer! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this movie in the theater, loved it, and made a note to buy it when it came out on DVD. I had to wait more than a year for the DVD, but it was worth the wait. This film is very well done, moves briskly, tells the story it needs to tell, never gets boring or talky, and is just very entertaining. This isn't just for Lutherans, but for everyone interested in church history or, for that matter, the history of western civilization.
This is probably the best version of Luther's life available. There was a 1975 film starring Stacy Keach (who did an excellent job), but that was a transcription of a stage play by John Osborne, and thus feels very stage-bound and non-cinematic. The 1953 version I've never seen and thus cannot comment on. But this latest version, with Joseph Fiennes, Alfred Molina, Jonathan Firth, Claire Cox, and the late Sir Peter Ustinov, I can recommend very highly.
Movie Review: Important History, Excellent Drama Summary: 5 Stars
One of my favorite movies is BECKET, a historical drama with Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole about the conflict of church and state in 12th Century England.
When I saw that a film about Martin Luther was playing in theatres last year, I made it a point to go--especially when I saw that Joseph Fiennes, Alfred Molina and Peter Ustinov were in the cast--and I'm glad I did.
LUTHER, like BECKET, is that rare film that dramatizes the life of a saint without draining his humanity and weaknesses. It not only dares to portray a corrupt church system but to also honestly convey one man's genuine struggle to find God. In this case, one man's search for God changed the course of Christianity and human history.
After watching this film, I was interested in finding out more about the real Luther.
I look forward to adding LUTHER to my DVD collection.
Movie Review: Luther Summary: 5 Stars
It's a very good movie that shows that god father loves
us. It is made by the Lutherans Church. I`m catholic
and the catholic church today is a very reformated
church, too. Very good actors, very authentic scenes
and places. But Luther is shown glorious but his
life, I think, was a harder one. There is something in
the movie which is like a sign to do good workship for the
people on earth in all churches, lutheran and catholic.
Without Martin Luther it may be that we got wotkship in the
language latino and only few people understand anything.
But there are too much sacraments were taken away by
the lutheran church, it`s a pity. The most importens is
Jesus Christus, there`s no question in both churches.
And he died for our sins.

Movie Review: Luther rediscovered the Gospel of grace. Summary: 5 Stars
In Luther, the 21st century has an opportunity to see a historically faithful drama of the great Reformer's contributions!
Martin Luther's legacy extends far beyond that of the church that bears his name (quite against his wishes): He rediscovered the Gospel of grace and spread it to all Christendom, whether they acknowledge it or not. In proclaiming mankind's freedom of conscience to the entire world, a direct personal relationship with God, sans intermediaries, becomes feasible. That is the crux of Luther's legacy.
Perhaps the media could be further convinced of his universal appeal ---- I would suggest that The History Channel might be a proper media outlet for a televised airing of this film. That channel's historical film presentations usually include scholarly discussion groups associated with the film's subject.
Movie Review: Luther makes the grade Summary: 5 Stars
I have two sons, ages 13 and 16. Last year we went to see the film "Luther" at the theater. We were captivated by the reality of the story and the overwhelmingly human portrayal of this man's life and times. Luther is portrayed as; genuinely human, genuinely distrubed by the spiritual battle raging within him, overwrought with the agony of living up to all the rules and regulations of the Catholic Church, and by the sight of poor people being required to pay to be forgiven, etc.... The compassion and compulsion of Luther is clearly conveyed in this film. The reasons for his actions are clearly depicted in the unveiling of his story. My sons and I have been affected by what we witnessed in this film. We have waited with great anticipation for the release of "Luther" onto DVD, so we could again witness the heroic life of a common man.
