Movie Reviews of LutherMovie Review: I am Yours. Save me. Summary: 5 Stars
Luther gives us a wonderful rendering of the life and trials of Martin Luther. This film is well-written and directed in addition to well-acted. Joseph Fiennes is outstanding as Luther, but this is an ensemble cast where everyone gets their moment to shine--Sir Peter Ustinov as Prince Frederick the Wise, Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark) as Tetzel and Claire Cox as Katharina Von Bora. The movie follows Luther's spiritual journey as a man who, at first, is angry with God and is certain that God is angry with him to becoming a man who discovers a loving God through Christ in the Scriptures of the New Testament. We see the Luther who stands up to the Catholic leaders of the day and declares to the people that salvation lies not in indulgences or in the Church itself, but in Christ and Christ alone. Luther is a very good movie, not only for Christians, but also for individuals who like good historical films or just good movies PERIOD!
Movie Review: Luther - a must have DVD Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is outstanding. It portrays the abusive state of the Roman Catholic Church in the 1500s. It is reasonably accurate, but like any video, it cannot portray all that a person is. It does not include Luther's changes in his later life where he (as did the Roman Church) elevate the clergy to be special keepers of the faith. Nonetheless, what is portrayed is powerfull and certainly one gets the price paid for listening to and obeying God while trying to work within the instutition of the earthy "church." It is very much like that today in many American churches, where the gospel has become distorted by both the fundamentalists and liberals of modernity and those who have abandoned objective truth all together in postmodernity. It brought this reader to a new sense of great humility for the blessings and freedoms that we do injoy in the western world and the incredible strength from God as we experience him and live in that relationship.
Movie Review: Excellent film about Luther Summary: 5 Stars
There have been at least three films about Luther: The 1953 classic black and white film, the 1970's ""Luther" with Stacy Keach as a psychologically conflicted Luther, and this version, which is the best. Big, colorful, well-written, wonderfully acted, this film is the type of big-budget historical drama that Hollywood used to do so well. Although Fiennes bears no resemblance to even the younger Luther, he does a great job and won this viewer over very quickly. As a former Catholic and now confessional Lutheran, I can say with experience that justification by works is, indeed, taught in the Catholic church. I never heard of justification by faith until I read the New Testament. I was very clearly taught in the catholic church, over and over, that I was saved by good works and not by faith. That Luther was so clear about this (and the Catholic church either denied it or waffled on it) is what began my move to Lutheranism.
Great movie. Don't miss it.
Movie Review: The best religion based film I've ever seen Summary: 5 Stars
While "Luther's" historical accuracy is questionable in several places, I believe the spirit of the film is intact. We don't realize how many ways we are blessed in this society. "Luther" takes you back to a time when mothers who couldn't afford to put bread on their tables were buying indulgences for their crippled children. You weren't just expected to ante up for yourself when the collection plate passed, but also to buy your forebears out of Purgatory as well. A common person could not find a _Bible_ written in their own language. Dissemination and interpretation of God's Word was up to the Church--and the Church wasn't precisely interested in getting the straight message across. "Luther" is beautifully done and illustrates a nice segment of these times for us. It's a thought-provoking film I'm glad today's times have allowed to be made--and for us to view. Strongly recommended for young history classes.
Movie Review: Passionate and moving Summary: 5 Stars
I am very impressed with this film. I am a Catholic and generally happy with that fact, but I am not stupid and the Catholic church certainly has done terrible wrong back then and even now. I had heard of Martin Luther and was curious to know more about him. What this film gives in incredible. I have never heard even The Pope talk like this. The pure unbridled faith of Luther is moving.
The best part of this film is that it is not trying to preach. It doesn't say "Believe this" instead it presents the story without apologies and lets you decide what you think of Luther's views. The Church is portrayed as concerned for Christianity as a whole, but more importantly, overwhelmed with the furtherance of it's own power and crushing influence. I believe this is true even to this day.
The world would be a better place if more people like Luther were in it. This will go in "Best of the Best" in my collection.
