Movie Reviews of Luther

Movie Review: Very inspiring and accurate
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this film soon after I read Ronald Bainton's powerful novel, "Here I Stand." First of all Jospeh Fiennes did an excellent job playing Luther and embodying the passion of Martin Luther. Whether you like Luther or not there is no doubt that he is probably the most influential character after Christ. A revolution was started after he posted his 95 theses denouncing Papal abuses to the Wittenberg Church. Western Civilization underwent a dramactic change because of the Reformation, which had a lot to do with the concept of the "priesthood of all believers."

In regards to this film the acting was very powerful, supporting cast as well. Also I was rather surprised about the accuracy with which was clearly important for the director of the film. There is no doubt that it definitely had a pro-Luther slant. I really enjoyed how Luther's struggles and his own sense of his inadequacy before a holy and perfect God is captured in this film. Of course much of that changes when he discovers justification by faith. I would just conclude by saying this film is very informative and inspiring.

Movie Review: Luther - - Best Historical Presentation of Martin Luther ever
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is the Best Historical Presentation of Martin Luther ever and the corruption that existed in the Middle Age Church, which would not change until there were such violent protest in Northern Europe. I recently purchased 7 copies and in total I have purchased about 12 copies to give as gifts. I also requested our local library purchase a copy.

I do not consider this DVD as entertainment, but it is History done better than any other Historical Film. One should also research the events occuring in England, and the Americas which were part of the Holy Roman Empire, and understand that Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, is a great-nephew of Catherine of Argon, King Henry VIII's first wife; and that he is also a decendent of Ferdnand and Isabel of Spain. The DVD will allow you to see the logic behind selling Indulgences and the need to finance St Peters Basilica in Rome. This is a DVD that you will want to view several times as it is so profound. Peter Ustinov and Alfred Molina give unforgetable performances in supporting roles.

Movie Review: A remarkable movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

As Catholic, I was a little bit shy of buying this movie, but since my husband was very interested to see it, and after I've read all the good reviews about it, I decided to buy it. And I LOVE IT!!! The movie is not just an outstanding artistic achievement (all the key characters are extraordinary played!) but also it has a great historic value. Luther was a necessity firstly for the German people (I can see now the huge impact that his writtings and, most importantly, the TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE into German, had on the german people and culture and on the development of the german language itself!) and secondly for the Catholic church itself (thanks to him, even if probably never admitted, the Catholic church started its own reform which, even if it was a very slow process, it did happen). And, inspired by what one of the cardinals in the movie said ('...Leo was a spiritual dwarf, when we needed a giant as Luther!"), I wonder how the Catholic church could have looked today if Luther reforms were accepted for debate?

Movie Review: Powerful - Moving and a Must See!
Summary: 5 Stars

What a powerful and well-done movie on one of the most important figures in Western European History. The movie was filmed on locations across Germany and Italy - adding to its historical value. The movie is VERY interesting and on target historically.

The bottom line - the movie brings to life the impact that Luther had upon Europe through his courage to stand alone against a corrupt Medieval system. Having been to all of the important Martin Luther sites in Germany (Wittemberg, Wartburg, Eisleben, Eisenach, Worms, Erfurt, Muhlhausen), the movie brought home the importance of his stand. Luther made the difference and his impact is felt across the ages to today.

I highly recommend this movie to all viewers and eagerly look forward to the 30 NOV release. Although we do have and view the Zone 2 version of this (for European speed DVD machines - released in early 2004), we can only watch it on our PC. What a pleasure it will be to watch in on a larger screen!

Don't miss this one.

Movie Review: Luther
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is excellent. Luther is not only portrayed accurately and well, it leaves you with awe of his struggle with the apostasy of the Papists of his day.

Joseph Fennes really does this part with excellence and his ability to be what he is acting is absolutely wonderful. If you love history, and love to see it portrayed accurately, within reason of course, this film will bring to you an edifying visual encounter with the way Yahweh deals with the hearts of men.

Equal with 'Amazing Grace' in accuracy and awe. I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to enjoy something other than someone's story of what might have been, and revealing what was. You do not have to be Lutheran to enjoy this--the Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians and others I know who have watched it came away knowing that a power higher than the thoughts of men are at work in the hearts of men. You may even tremble at the Word of God as spoken of in Amos 9.
