Movie Reviews of Luther

Movie Review: One of the best films ever made.
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this film in theaters last year and was awed by it.

First of all, the film is not anti-Catholic as some critics have said. It was made in Germany with the cooperation of the Catholic and Lutheran churches there. It is fact based and tells the truth about what happened. It may portray them in a bad light, but calling the film anti-Catholic would be like calling a film about the Holocaust anti-German.

This film shows the brutality of the Spanish inquisition and their notoriously anti-Prosestant attacks. Another early Protestant, William Tyndale, was executed for heresy. His 'crime' was translating the Bible into English. Though the Catholic Church did do these things, they have apologized for it.

The film has stunning performances by Joseph Finnes (Ralph Finnes' brother)and Peter Ustinov in his last film role before his death.

On October 31, 1517 A.D. the door of the Wittenberg church had Luther's 95 theses nailed on it, and with that the door to religious freedom was opened. This film should be seen even by secular people because if it were not for Luther, there may have been no seperation of Church and state until many years later.

The film is an absolute must-see for those interested in the Protestant Reformation.

Movie Review: Magnificent Film & Good Starting Place
Summary: 5 Stars

This film has all of the passion and pathos of the best films I've seen, plus the extra bonus of teaching a history lesson at the same time! This film has conflict, fear, death, romance, everything. Don't rent this film, purchase it.

Someone might ask, "Yes, but is the film accurate?" The answer is a qualified, "yes". The film is so accurate that I found myself quoting lines before I saw them based upon my previous studies of Luther's life. The special effects are very convincing, and highly accurate.

However, the film does have a flaw or two. It takes place over the period of many years, but no one seems to age! This could give the viewer an erroneous view of history. Also, the film paints Luther in a positive light and downplays darker aspects of Luther's character, just showing enough glimpses to hold critics at bay.

If you want a great piece of entertainment that will teach a valuable history lesson at the same time, buy this film. If this film sparks an interest to dig deeper into Luther's life, pick up the docu-drama, "Martin Luther". It is a part of the PBS video series "Empires". It is also sold by Amazon and will open some new questions. It compliments this film well.

Movie Review: Where corruption grows reformers arise
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the DVD of this film as soon as it came out.

The more things change the more they so remain the same. Corrupt clergymen. (Today its the Catholic church and its priests). Theologians who sacrifice the Word of God to Political Correctness. Embracing the abominable to 'get along'. Selling out the world of God and compromising on the abominable to get a few coins. People unfit to be clergy becoming bishops as in the Episcopal Church in the US. In Luther's day, things were just as vile.

And Luther, though not the first to take up the cause, stood up to all this corruption. And the western world changed.

This movie is his story. The story of the Great Uncompromising Christian Reformer.

Admittedly it does not give full depth and cover everything about this great man but no movie or even mini-series can, simply because there is just not enough time. However, it does a good job of it.

For those not interested in the message, this film is filled with color and drama. The scenerie of Luther's medieval world well portrayed. Quite lovely. Colorful. Anyone interested in medieval times will enjoy this film for its imagery. Excellent acting.

A great film.

Movie Review: An Important Piece of History
Summary: 5 Stars

Throughout the history of Christianity and before, the religious Establishment has often been at odds with the faithful who take their religion personally. That syndrome continues in many forms today, with for example, a "building program" that becomes an end in itself rather than a channel for the worship of God.

With superb acting all around, "Luther" clearly defines the reasons and results of the Protestant Reformation in a way that will be understood and appreciated by modern Protestants and Catholics alike. In this case, Pope Leo's "building program" was St. Peter's Basilica. Martin Luther is presented as a sincere and dedicated young priest who is shocked and heartsick over the Pope's selling of indulgences (forgiveness of sin) in exchange for building fund contributions.

Martin Luther maintains his sincerity and humility throughout the movie, as the corruption of the Establishment becomes more and more apparent. He is awed by the realization of the power that his movement has unleashed. His many contributions to Christianity are brought out, including his hymns and his translation of the Holy Bible into German, "the language of the people."

Movie Review: Inspiring and Powerful; Superb Acting by All
Summary: 5 Stars

I think this is a powerful picture of Luther's life of devotion, courage and reformation. The film offers intrigue, suspense and seems to be historically accurate.

Luthers spiritual growth is boldly displayed. We see his personal reformation of soul that inspired his movement. He combats physical and spiritual enemies, those seen and unseen. We see the lust for power and wealth that corrupts religion (in this case, the Roman Catholic Church) and that hinder spiritual freedom for all.

The movie provides the conflits Luther faced as he boldly stood on his articles of faith. It also examines the conflicts within the Roman Catholic Church at the time between those wanting to hold onto power and those wanting reform.

This is a well-done biographical film that captures the multi-faceted life and a spiritual and intellectual giant who lived a humble life. We learn of his great passion to share the love of Christ above all else. I think most would enjoy this film and be moved by it. I was worried that his faith would be watered down and made ambigous, but the movie shows his true Christian faith and emphasis on the word of God.
