Movie Reviews of Lucky YouMovie Review: A movie for the poker players Summary: 3 Stars
The movie has the facade of a romantic movie set in the world of poker but it's actually the other way round. It's about poker (and poker players) and the romance and the drama is more on the side lines. I'm a fan of both so I enjoyed the movie and I'm somewhat familiar with the poker terms so it was fun to watch, but I don't know if I'd have enjoyed it as much if I didn't know much about poker.
The movie is set in Vegas and exposes the mundane world of Vegas that has existed under the radar. Most of us know of the big shows in vegas, Texas Hold'em, and slot machines but the life of the people who call Vegas home, we're not so familiar with - and mostly don't care. The movie introduces that in a very natural way which I found quite fascinating. Also the idea of risk and gambling (rules of poker) is applied throughout the movie - in conversations and relationships - which was also a very nice touch to this movie about poker.
There's a lot of poker playing. And they've scouted real poker players to be in the movie - some poker celebrities! So that's another fun thing to see in the movie.
The father - son tension between Eric Bana and Robert Duvall was also very sweet and well done but in the end, the movie will make sense more to people who are familiar with poker.
Movie Review: Lucky You If You Have Low Expectations Summary: 3 Stars
Lucky You is the story of a chance meeting between two strangers who obviously feel a connection (Eric Bana and Drew Berrymore). Seems like a recipe for success, doesn't it? Now figure in that boy is an obsessive poker player, willing to steal money from the girl he loves, bets on everything from miniature golf to living in a bathroom at the Aladdin casino, and has serious "daddy" issues. Girl is from a small town, so more than a little naive and is living with her Vegas veteran sister, played by Debra Messing. Where to even begin? The script was over extended and the film was almost unbearable to watch with a run time of two hours and fifteen minutes. Remarkably in this time there is not one character that is developed enough to make the viewer actually care about them. The film doesn't even serve as a good chick flick or rainy day watch. It's too bad that the script never seems to have made it to an editing board, with a little character development, script detailing, and storyline improvement the all-star cast may have had a chance. If you're looking for a Vegas themed movie worth viewing check out Leaving Las Vegas or 21, but leave Lucky You as a last resort.
Movie Review: Lucky you, Lucky me Summary: 3 Stars
Nice film to watch on dvd.... I would say it is the middle of the road average in terms of movies out there on the market today.
The acting and storyline are good and very solid throughout... Eric Bana's character is a professional poker player in Las Vegas struggling with some issues like a difficult time making a commitment in the romantic department. His character also has issues with his professional poker playing father who placed poker far and above his family. These issues seem to be resolved by the end of the movie in an understated kind of way.
Movie Review: lucky you..... Summary: 3 Stars
An well acted movie with an okay script. The story line lacked umph enough for it to be a break out movie. It was a nice movie for entertainment purpose though. A little bit of language but nothing too bad! (that's probably why it didn't make it in hollywood!)
A man obsessed with beating his father in poker is introduced to a woman who makes him THINK about the life he is living and how he is living it.
Movie Review: good poker movie Summary: 3 Stars
Romance is barely present in this movie as poker takes over 80% of the movie. Aficionados of poker should enjoy this, as it present many aspects of playing the game.
As for the romance, it's pathetically predictable.
The acting is so-so, the directing is okay, there's nothing really worth mentioning.
It's just a clean movie without any violence or guns.
Enjoyable.
