Movie Reviews of Lucille Ball Here's Lucy

Movie Review: Very Entertaining DVD Set But Wrong Title
Summary: 5 Stars

I won't repeat all the commentary that's gone before me. I think most people who have commented are in agreement that this DVD set stands out mostly because of the fantastic extras that were included, not because of the episode selection. While some wonderful, true favorites were included, a number of not-so-wonderful sub-par episodes were included as well.

About a year ago, a survey was done among fans of the show to determine which episodes were the best. One of the criteria for input to be used in this ranking was that survey respondents had to be familiar with all episodes of the series. Then a complicated mathematical system was applied to the fan input to rank the episodes. In all, 81 episodes of the 144 got ranked, meaning that there were 81 episodes that wound up somewhere on at least one fan's list of favorites. And the remaining 63 episodes were on nobody's list of favorites.

What follows is the top 24 episodes from that survey. This is what the DVD set would have looked like had just the fans' favorites been considered. In each instance where one of these episodes wound up on the DVD set, I have indicated that. Twelve of these episodes actually did make it onto the DVD set.

Next is a listing of the 24 episodes that actually are featured on the DVD set. Next to each of those I have indicated where they ranked on the fan favorites list. In some cases, they fall far down the list. The Johnny Carson episode, for example, is in 63rd place on the fan favorites list. The Sammy Davis Jr. episode wasn't ranked at all as it didn't even get included among the fans' top 81 (surprisingly, ten episodes on the DVD set were not even among the fans' Top 81).

So . . . here are the fans' Top 24 Favorites, in rank order (please note there were ties for positions 11, 15, 17, 20 and 22):

> 1. Lucy Meets the Burtons (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 2. With Viv as a Friend, Who Needs an Enemy? (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 3. Lucy is N.G. as an R.N.
> 4. Lucy Carter Meets Lucille Ball
> 5. Lucy and Lawrence Welk (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 6. Lucy Fights the System
> 7. Lucy and Jack Benny's Biography (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 8. Lucy, the Matchmaker (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 9. Lucy, the Crusader (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 10. A Date for Lucy (Cesar Romero)
> 11. Lucy and Ann-Margret (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 11. Lucy, the Fixer (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 13. Lucy and Harry's Pot
> 14. Kim Moves Out
> 15. Lucy and the Used Car Dealer (Milton Berle) (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 15. Lucy and Flip Go Legit (Flip Wilson) (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 17. Harry Carter, Male Nurse
> 17. Ginger Rogers Comes to Tea (INCLUDED ON DVD)
> 19. Lucy and Harry's Tonsils

> 20. Lucy Runs the Rapids
> 22. Someone's on the Ski Lift with Dinah (Dinah Shore)
> 22. Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana
> 24. Lucy Visits Jack Benny (INCLUDED ON DVD)

Now here is the list of episodes included on the DVD set. Next to each is an indication of where it ranked on the fan favorites list, if it made it on that list at all:

> Lucy Meets the Burtons (Rank: 1)
> Lucy and Johnny Carson (Rank: 63)
