Movie Review: More like 10 STARS
Summary: 5 Stars
Ms. Day should have received an Oscar for this. Miss Girl Next Door really showed what she was made of. If you like suspense, glamor and real singing and acting, this is the movie for you. The restoration is wonderful and the sound terriffic. One of my favorite movies of all times. Cagney is at the top of his game and he and Day work GREAT together. This movie was produced when all the big musicals were coming to an end. SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN OSCAR, I'M TELLING YOU.Movie Review: Wonderfully Done Movie!

This movie stars Doris Day and James Cagney possibly in their very finest performance. Day is quite different in her acting role which is very dramatic and well played out. Her singing is outstanding. Cagney is great as the insecure gangster too.
The plot, costumes, acting, and everything is superb. If you love Doris Day then this is the movie for you. It is one of those movies you can watch and discuss and then watch it over again. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!

I grew up on the Doris Day comedies of the 60's and I had no idea that Doris Day could play a dramatic part like this. She is outstanding in the role of jazz singer Ruth Etting. The songs are marvelous, especially "Shakin the Blues Away", and the movie never lags. In my opinion it's Doris Day's best movie, and although her comedies were entertaining, it's too bad she didn't get to do more movies like this one. Doris Day plays the songstress Ruth Etting who's trying to make it in show business. James Cagney who plays a well known Chicago racketeer Martin the Gimp is obsessed with her. Things get out of control between the two. A very exciting film taking you back to the roaring 20's. Great for your film collection.

This is a very different Doris Day vehicle than her Rock Hudson pairing. This parallels her personal life at the time as well as being the true story of Ruth Etting. Although there are some funny moments, this is more drama than musical comedy. The story is very interesting and the music is wonderful. If you enjoy Doris Day, you will love this movie. Most entertaining!
