Movie Review: "Could you go for a Doctor?" "Sure, send him in."
Summary: 4 Stars
Since I'd already seen the classic Jeanette Macdonald/Maurice Chevalier pairing "The Merry Widow", I thought I'd check out "Love Me Tonight" for comparison purposes. Not bad! I would even say, in fact, that it surpasses "The Merry Widow", certainly in terms of fun.
Chevalier plays a humble tailor trying to collect a host of bills from a solvent aristocrat. While at the noble's chateau, Chevalier is mistaken for a Baron, and he takes advantage of the mistake to romance a beautiful but troubled Princess (MacDonald). Unfortunately, he gives himself away when he takes over for Jeanette's seamstress and makes her a gorgeous riding outfit. Sewing is not an ability Barons are noted for.
The plot's light and fluffy, the songs are tuneful (and Chevalier sings his famous "Mimi"), and the cast certainly has a good time. Deserving particular attention is a very young Myrna Loy, who plays a flirty, fun loving Countess. There's no real point to her character, but she's a blast all the same (and gets most of the film's best lines, including the one in my review title.)
Nifty sets, great costumes, and pretty photography round out the merits of "Love Me Tonight" and I recommend it for fans of MacDonald, Chevalier, Loy or early black and white musicals. Enjoy!
(NOTE: Isn't interesting that the Doctor's solution for Jeanette's inexplicable fainting spells is for her to get married? That's the medical community for you!)
