Movie Reviews of Love JonesMovie Review: fantastic movie, killer sound track... it's an island disc!! Summary: 5 Stars
i cannot say enough good things about this movie. it's tight scripting, spot-on casting, appropriate yet fairly underexposed setting and totally strastospheric soundtrack make for one of the best movies ever. and i totally agree with viewer philadelphia that this movie didn't get the marketing push it deserved. i mean, how often do you get to see a smart, intelligent (not always the same thing), funny and heart-breaking african-american love story WITHOUT guns, drugs, gangsters and totally incomprehensible vernacular?and i have a bone to pick with allentim: you missed the point totally. it's not supposed to be a fast and it definitely ain't boring. if you've paid attention to the dialogue, you can tell that the jokes, motifs and allusions come fast and furious. just a tip: notice the take on the idea of talking and speech by ALL the characters, the meanings in the movie will open up totally. :)
Movie Review: "Refreshing" Summary: 5 Stars
This movie debuted in an era where the gangster and shot-em-up movies were prevalent. It was so refreshing to see a black love story about the ups and downs...joys and sorrows of a relationship. I thought Larenz Tate and Nia Long gave a phenomenal performance. I have watched this movie a zillion times and have not gotten tired of it once. As a matter of fact, after all these years, this movie still has the power to evoke emotion out of me. I still smile when Darius read his poem to Nina the first night they met...I still get angry when Darius hooked up with that chick as soon as Nina left town...I still get tears in my eyes at the end of the movie when Darius tells Nina that the love he feels for her is "urgent like a ..." Need I go on. In my book, this movie is an all time black love story.
Movie Review: Amazingly Refreshing... Summary: 5 Stars
I love this movie. I may be bias in my assessment of this movie since it is my favorite movie. I love Larenz Tate playing the role of (Darius Lovehal). This is a beautiful film and it is so realistic in its story. I have watched this movie so many times and do not get tire of watching it.
Nina Mosley (Nia Long): "You always want what you want when you want it. Why is everything so urgent with you?"
Darius Lovehal (Larenz Tate):"Let me tell you somethin'. This here, right now, at this very moment, is all that matters to me. I love you. That's urgent like a Mother..."
What matters right now at this very moment, is watching this movie one more time. I love this movie.
Movie Review: uneven, cheesy but so lovely Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is super stilted and uneven in some areas of the dialogue - one liners that don't quite fit into a dialogue. Like speaking song lyrics. But despite these flaws, I felt moved to write, because there are moments of unsurpassed reality, truth, and sincere emotion as regards to romance and falling in love and all that.
It is also so unusual and special to see a movie starring all black people, all beautiful and intellectual. For once we are not the usual sidekicks, obligatory people of color as background, or some comic relief character.
I came across this movie because I love Dionne Farris's song, Penny with a Hole In It, and the song was on the excellent soundtrack.
Movie Review: Positive black love in cinema Summary: 5 Stars
There are several reasons to love this movie. First, the poetry used to tell part of the story was GREAT. As a writer, I could appreciate the use of words to convey a secret message. Out of this kind of artistic expression have come artists like india.arie, Jill Scott and Floetry AND the proliferation of open-mics and spoken word poetry e.g. HBO's Def Poetry Jam. Second the soundtrak used new artists and old artist such as the under-appreciated Billy Eckstine (Jelly). It showed young, educated, professional characters navagating thru life just like I was when this movie came out. I love it everytime it comes on cable and jam to the soundtrak always... and it doesn't hurt to watch Larenz Tate be DAMN sexy
