Movie Reviews of Los Lobos - Live At The Fillmore

Movie Review: Simply Electrifying...
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is the best of all worlds. The production is top notch. The sound is equally so. The performance?

Well, that little ol' band from East L.A. is as tight as it gets. These gents are true musicians who, after playing with each other for 30 years, seem to be able to read each other's mind. If you had the television screen and the crowd noise off, you would swear you were listening to a studio recording for most of the tunes.

But, there are a few that are obviously NOT studio recordings. There are a few exemplary moments in this film where the boys simply jam. And boy, can they jam. These guys are the furthest thing away from hacks as can be. They are true showmen and true professionals who show up for a gig ready to WORK.

It's nice that they're playing at the historic Fillmore. Having never had the pleaure of being inside myself I was struck by how small the venue was. It really lends its intimacy to the film and the whole experience. This is one film where it really does feel like you are there.

The tunes are varied but lean heavily on the fairly recent and very excellent "Good Morning Atzlan". I think if there were a deficiency in this production, it might take form in the fact that people who are looking for a "Greatest Hits" recording would be disappointed. They throw in a few oldies but it really is a portrait of the band today (at least, the band in 2004).

And they have matured majestically in these 30 years. They have always been excellent musicians and song writers but if one listens to "Will The Wolf Survive" today and compare it to the aforementioned "Atzlan", you will see stark differences. For the better, I think.

Their rhythms and music are technically challenging with plenty of time shifts and key shifts and not nearly so predictable as their early stuff. This DVD showcases their virtuosity quite nicely and the viewer is left with a genuine feeling of awe. And the thing is, these guys can rock harder and longer then bands half their age and they do it with a nonchalance that is startling. And, they do it without even breaking a sweat. To the uninitiated, it might seem as they are phoning this performance in but when you listen to what they are doing, you realize that NObody can phone in THAT kind of virtuosity.

Many, many tasty tracks. The Mas y Mas finale is worth the price of admission alone with slide master Robert Randolph trading scorching licks with David Hildago. The song really brings the house down and deservedly so.

If you are a fan, what are you waiting for? If you are new to The Wolves, I encourage you to see an American Treasure in action. If you are simply a fan of music, this is a demonstration of the craft at its best. An excellent film that, for me, ranks right up there with "Buena Vista Social Club" as one of those rare moments where music, film and magic meet.
